Guest escortcabrst
hi all, when my rs turbo cabriolet was hot it wouldn't start,so today i change the starter, not sure if it was a turbo one but it had the 3 terminals on the starter like the one i took off,the battery was flat so with a push it went drove it for 10 mins turned it off and it fired straight back up,come to it tonight and it fird straight up i then took it out for an hour or so and while i was driving i put it in neutral and turned ignition off and tried starting and it turned slow and didnt start so i put it in 2nd and bumped it,then 10 mins later when i got home i turned it off and it fired up again,so i tried again and it fired up again, tried it one more time and it didnt have enuff power, when you rev the enginethe lights dont brighten up or anyrhing, but it must hold abit of charge because as i said when i left it today it fired up again tonight so not sure weather to change alternator or battery first and if it could be something else any suggestions would be grateful cheers all
gingergman
it mite be because the starter motor is getting to hot from the heat off the turbo, i think you can get a heat shield if there aint already one on it, quite a common problem i think. see wot others say tho lol
Guest markeyboy
as ginger man said, starter motors dont like heat and give the symptoms that you are getting when they do, you need to get a heat shield around the starter motor to help keep the heat off it, dont know if you can buy them or make ur own tho
Guest escortcabrst
why would the battery drain so quick could it be cause of a crappy battery and should the lights brighten when you rev the engine,i put a second hand starter on today, the battery light comes on with ignition and goes out normal when engine running,so do you think its not alternator cheers for replys
gingergman
ebay item number 130208096116 is the battery actually drained tho or does it just sound flat because it turns over very slow? starter will get lazy cos of the heat and struggle to turn over! gingergman
an oh, in my opinion i wouldnt change the alternator. when its running get a multi meter and check what volts the battery has to be sure!
Guest escortcabrst
gonna check tomorrow see if it turns over when its cold, but the other day i took it out and it did the same with old starter and then when i left it the next day battery was flat, but the battery did drain to nothing the other day cause of reverse lights is wired with no ignition and when left in reverse the lights stay on with out realising, tomorrw gonna try another battery then use multimeter and make a decent heat shield,i think when the starter is hot its slow turning over and with me keep trying to turn it over with hot starter im killing the battery,i have posted this thread on three different sites and this site has had most replies hope i get this sorted as i love cabriolet and with a turbo engine its only better thanks for replies all

Guest cossi
My turbo suffers from the same problem , it was just the heat from the turbo causing the problem
Guest escortcabrst
cheers guys been advised on rs turbo forum to use the alty heat shield as people have never had a problem since fitting it,the battery keeps going flat i think because i keep turning it over while its hot,and now the alternator has just packed in,the battery light came on and then very shortly when i pressed brake pedal engine died so will get them sorted soon cheers for replys
Guest jasexr3i
my rs turbo did this for a bit it was the earth for the alternator that was loose. it had heat shield and they are waist of time when it rains water sits on it then makes all the spark plugs damp
Guest lincsragtop
im havin the same prob on my ekky but it just the 3i mine had a new bat about a year ago and is gud enough to start it when frozen solid so must be a gud un and its gettin charge of 14 volts at idle so is gettin charge but every now and then it wont turn over so i stick a jump pack on it and away she goes and i can drive it half a mile and try again and it bout chucks the engine out the car it turns over so quick.i first thought charging as the chagre wire from alt to starter was very crusty and green so built new one with perfect resistance qualiteys when tested so i tink mine must be heat shiled to or lack of it so im gonna try the same. did you have sucess with heat shield? didnt mean to thread hi jack soz
