Hi all

Hope someone can help me

My new cabby started fine this morning,(as it has every morning for the last month that i have owned it).

But at lunchtime when i tryed it just cranked over and would not start.

I cant hear the fuel pump buzzing when ignition is first switched on,but then i dont remember ever hearing it like i did on my old mk4.

I havent got a spark either.

I changed the crank sensor this evening,no change.

A friend told me about a fuel cut off switch, where is it located.

Or could it be fuel pump relay(colour?) or pump?

L reg 1.8 130bhp Zetec si

Thanks

pablo

The fuel cut off switch you refer to is under the kickplate to the right of the accelerator pedal, it has a little red reset pushbutton on it, but if you can hear the pump priming when you turn the ignition on, then that is not the problem,

The reason the mk4 pump sounded noisier was because it was mounted outside the petrol tank on the car body, in later models the fuel pump is mounted inside the tank, and when one of those connectors snaps off due to rot, they can be a cow to get to

Right back to your problem of no spark, this could be a number of problems,

1....snapped cambelt is the worst senario, hopefully its not that,

2....then you might have damp somewhere in the ignition circuit,

3....a broken or loose connection in the ignition circuit,

4....engine management system fault,

i would start with the above and eliminate these first before delving deeper into it.. good luck

I misread your bit about cant hear the pump, and i cant edit the above post now :wow:

when you put the ignition on you should only hear the pump prime for a few seconds and then it should stop, if you cant hear it then see if the switch needs resetting lol.

hi cabbytech

Today i have tryed a new fuel pump relay. No joy.but i can hear and feel it clicking.

Cant hear anything from the pump when ignition first turned.

My fuse box doesnt look too good and last week the delay on the roof lamp stoped working.I believe there is a relay for this in the fusebox.

Could this be my proplem?

Or a non working fuel pump?

I'm gonna lower the tank and try and run a 12v live to the pump to test,Will this be ok to test if the pump works?

Either way my new car is proving expensive.

Fords have told me that my fuse box ( 93AG14A073BAA ) was only manufactured for one year 08.92 - 08.93 And is £262+vat and a fuel pump from a factors is about £100

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Pablo

You could try 12v direct to the pump to see if it works, if the relay is clicking in, then its deffo a power problem to the pump, the pump relay R9 gives its power to the pump from fuse F5, i take it this is ok ? this in turn is fed from the fuse C which is next to the battery with a few other fuses, check these are ok and have a good connection to the battery, and lets take it from there.

There was a fuel pump on ebay yesterday but im not sure if it was for a mk 5, it was £30 plus postage, a jaguar fuel pump fits as well by the way, just need to take it out of its existing carriage and put it into the escort one..

Thanks for the answers to my many questions.

It was the fusebox at fault.

Fitted today and car all better.

Well apart from the interior lamp.

Does anyone know which way round the wires go?
