I Think I May Need A New Gearbox

Hi Everyone, just wondering if you could offer some advice. I've got a 1993 1.6 Mistral Cabbi and it has recently started making a Growling noise when I ease off the accelerator. I've been told this could be the gearbox. I've tried to top up the gearbox fluid, and hardly any stayed in the box. So I'm thinking this could mean I need a replacement.

Is there anything I need to know about when getting a replacement? - Will only a box from an escort of the same engine size be suitable? And would it be better to get a reconditioned one, or would one from a broken car be just as good?

I was planning on replacing it myself if this wouldn't be too difficult to do.

Any help would be much appreciated.

hi lucie , sounds like your main shaft bearing has gone in the gearbox. oh and when filling the gearbox oil up, it should only be filled on the flat and when it just starts to trickle out of the filler hole. then its full.

what engine is in it?

cvh?

zetec?

then we can give you the right anwser.

main shaft bearing failure is very common in cvh boxes. had 2 go in a year. the cvh box is easier to fit, still a bugger to do especially if you have never done it before. the bearing can be replaced but isn't really worth it. might as well get a cheap second hand box from an xr3i or rs turbo.

zetec boxes are a right pain to fit and i personnaly hate doing them, but it all depends if it is the IB5 box or the MTX75 box. ...lol

need to know if its a cvh or zetec

and a photo would go a long way too.

then your get the right advice

hi lucie i would say it sounds like the trust bearing in your gearbox which is very common on the cvh engines if it is your trust bearing you will not need a new gearbox just a new trust bearing still got to take the gearbox of thought to do the job the easy way to tell if its your trust bearing is start your car and see if it makes the growling noise then press the clutch down if the noise goes off its your trust bearing hope this helps you thanks eddie.

Hey, Thank you for your quick responses. The engine is a cvh, not a zetec.

Eddie, the noise does stop when I engage the clutch.

Graeme I have taken some pics of the gearbox, but not sure whether they will be any good. I will post them when I get back from work.

Thank you both for your advice.

if it starts to sound like the millenium falcon, then you know its completly screwed...lol. it will be worse in say 2nd gear.

the thrust bearing will growl and rumble. it will do this when stationary but usually stop when you put the clutch down. it may even stop itself after awhile. i've had new ones do this. very common on those boxes. but not a major problem.

if the box is starting to whine and make the noise of a hammer drill when slowing down with the foot off the clutch pedal in a low gear. then most probably a mashed box.

hope this helps.
