f40 cab
hi if its only the head gasket that went and nothing else wrong with engine then it would be best to fix it, but if the engine is old and knackered then new engine. just price up a head skim at local engine shop and new head gasket set first to give you an idea about how much it will cost then compare that with a recon or second hand engine you'll soon have your answer. Escort Cabriolet Club
I can get you a full head gasket set inc head bolts and a waterpump for £150 !!! Average price to do the work is £400, so £550 ish in total !!!
Guest 6tracy9
Depends on whether you would be doing the work yourself or not, I have now killed 2 engines in my mk5 - but luckily for me i've got a mechanic as a husband!!! LOL!!! he can have an engine out and new one in in less than a day - so for me the better option would be just to go straight for the engine swap, stick to the same engine and you'll not have to change anything else!! Guest hewy
tracey! i know where an engine is right now but its in a mondeo. its a 1.8 16v! its in ellesmere port. its cheaper to replace the engine than a rebuild due from my own expeirence. Guest Dan102030
well if ur dropping a 1.8 silver top in then hunt a little longer and get 2.0 silver top, straight swap, good base, 130bhp standard and easy 2 get more, got a mate running 2.0 bottom end with 1.8 head (slightly higher compression) swap cams over from 2.0, 2.0 throttle body and maf, air filter, ashley 4-2-1 manifold and cat back and his is at 170 nearly, drives lovely
Escort Cabriolet Club
Bit more too it than that mate, you need to swap over the sump, oil pick-up pipe and alternator bracket from a 1.8 Zetec first, plus a few other bits !!!
