Roof Leaking

Hi everyone, im new here and new with an escort cabbie. This is also my first car so bear with me.

I baught my car about 2 months ago now and found after a couple of weeks that i have a leak, its only a minor leak i think but it needs sorting before winter sets in. The leak initially seems to be around the front windows as that is where it leaks. I have looked over the forums and gots some good hints and tips etc, so far i have found that the hooks that hold the roof down on the passenger side has some thread and the drivers side, no thread at all which indicates that someone has been messing with them as the drivers side has been tightened all the way.

First of all im not sure whether its going to be worth replasing the whole roof, inner skin, outer skin, seals & frame as the hood has some tears by the back windows on both sides and the hood has teared where the rivots are at the back both sides. the seals at the back look as though they are shot because the bits that hold them to the frame have been teared off and they look like its being held in with pva glue or something along with the overflap of the actual hood. Also above the doors the hood does not run flush along the top seals of the windows. I have checked the tension cables and they are rock solid but dont look like they are position properly. it tends to catch on part of the fram i think. This is the same again on both sides.

Finally the 1 day i went to my car after it had pissed down with rain and i had a puddle in the rear footwell of the drivers side but i have no idea where the water came from as when i touched all the sides it was dry, the only bit that wasnt dry was underneath the drivers seat which leads me to believe the water run from the drivers footwell to the back (i was parked on a slope for a couple of days). Oh and i think i have a mk4 but could be a mk5 if this helps. I will try and get some pics on here asap.

Any help will be greatly appriciated and sorry the post is a bit all over the place.

Sounds like your best changing the whole roof, much easier and quick to do.

I find i have to open my doors, close my windows then close the doors, this way i get no leaking through the windows, seems to seal properly.

If i close the windows with the doors shut they dont seem to seal properly and let water in, dont know if its the same on yours, give it a try and see if it stops the leaking.

Just a suggestion as this is what i have found with mine, H reg Mk5

could be that the hooks are TOO tight !!!!if you dont have a gap(channel) along where the hood meets the windscreen it will leak!!!loosen it off a couple of turns see how you get on

also if possible try and park it on level ground

(i know this is easier said than done but it can make a huge difference!!!)
