Quick description: 1995 Mk5, friday morning nearly flat battery (new 3 months ago), jumped and it was ok all day, parked 6 friday night and by 11 yesterday

morning it was completely dead. Jumped and ran for a while, started several times during the morning ok.

Disconnected the battery and checked for a drain with an ammeter.

30 mA, doors closed, ignition off etc (petrol gauge and clock I assume)

open door, 0.8 A

shut door 370mA, which I would have assumed to be the 30mA as before

open and shut door a few times and it varies between 30 and 370 mA

So I assume it's the interior lights, remove screw from drivers side switch and it drops to 30mA

slam door several times and it's back to 370mA

Work my way through the fuses one at a time and number 21 drops it down to 20Ma

slam doors several times and apart from the interior light falling out the drain stays at 20mA

Book says 21 feeds the radio, interior lights, clock and cigar lighter so i pull the dashboard apart and look for shorts etc

Fuse back in and drain still at 370mA, remove radio and no change, pull all wires to check for any loose connections and no change.

Left the battery disconnected overnight and it's at 12.10V, was 12.15V when I checked last night so that seems ok, reconnected and started fine.

Fuse 21 still out, drain 20mA.

I am stumped as to what to look for next, any ideas??

I did find out that the radio takes 0.8-1.2 amps, the drivers window 4 amps, and the roof motor 18 amps which is quite impressive for a meter only

rated to 10A!!

does boot light and under bonnet come from this fuse? havent got a mk5 drawing so dont know meself.

i would remove the interior lights and door switches and radio and anyhitng alse that is actually connected to the loom and see what happens, then you will know if its a componenet or a wire...make sure all ends are taped after removing them.

Boot light hadn't crossed my mind I'll disconnect that tonight (coincidentally when I got the car that light was disconnected and had no bulb

in it anyway) The 350mA drain would be about right for a 4w bulb thinking about it ..........

I'll check the Haynes diagram and see where the boot light is fed from.

Don't think there's a bonnet light, if there is it's well hidden!

Disconnected the drivers door switch already, and the radio and neither seemed to make any difference.

Is there likely to be a delay unit for the interior lights somewhere??

Well guess what I found tonight........

Fuse 21 also controls the boot light.

If I slam the boot the light goes off, if I shut it properly the light stays on...

The fuse is back and the bulb is removed, I'll leave it till tomorrow noght and see if it's still ok.

Thanks for your help.
