To Cone Or Not To Cone ???

Just been reading some of the posts regarding K&N filters.

I get the impression that the cone version is useless and that a panel filter is the way to go.

Does that mean that no-one has seen an improvement using the cone filter or is it just certain

models that dont see an improvement???

I ask this because I'm currently bidding on one on ebay to go on my 1.6 tennis edition. Am I waisting my time and money??

I have one fitted on my Focus ST170 and that made a great improvement, especially at the low rev range.

Also, I noticed the FSE Valve mentioned a couple of times. I also have one of these on the focus but found

it made little or no difference. Is it worth transferring it over to my cabby??? :help:

On my MFI I use a K&N panel mate.

Have taken the airbox out and drilled it all over and now it makes a nice "growl" and I guess is a bit smoother on pull away but nothing drastic to be honest.

When I`ve asked whether to go with a cone I have been told the panel and the drilling is a better way to go.

Am going to modify this, however,so that I have an intake from the bumper so I get a colder rush of air through.

Well let`s hope someone outbids you mate.

Where abouts are you?

What engine you got?

I have an MFI airbox if you wanna play around with that rather than drill yours` just in case you don`t like the result?

the idea is to suck cold air into your engine. the standard airbox sheilds the intake from warm/hot air from the engine and normally has a separate feed going to the front somewhere. the more air that gets sucked in the better.

some people use cone filters to maximise the air into the filter. but this in turn sucks hot air from the engine which seems to defite the object. the best way found is to setup pipes to come from the front of your airbox and opposite side of the airbox to the engine to go out at the front of the car so it gets a direct cold air feed. also a k'n panel filter works very well.

unless you are going to have the cone filter fitted well away from the engine and directed as close to a fresh air supply as possible, then i say its not worth wasting your money. the only up side to a cone filter is it sounds bloody good. hence the reason i kept the one on my rs2000.

fast ford did a test a few years ago on a series 1 rs, and they worked out that the stock filter with a drilled box gave the most increase in bhp and torque.

Personally i like to use panel filters where possible with drilled box its a great combination.
