Hey guys, Just brought me my first mk4 escort cab  ...only to find theres a problem with the alternator. ive fitted a brand spanking new one but still its not charging the battery unless its sparked out :S im unsure if its wired up propally but dont know how its ment to be wired up!

the escort has been used as a rs turbo in the past but is know converted bk to a xr3 efi.

There are 2 wires connected to the alternator a red one and a blue one, any ideas?

Trace the wires back from the alternator, where do they go??. also that blue wire is prone to breaking up. that will stop the car from charging, i changed my blue wire. get the volts meter out to check if your alternator is throwin anythingout, are you sure its not because your battery is not holding the charge??

:drive1:

I think i might of found the problem, correct me if im wrong but becouse but due to the engine being out of an xr2i. there should be a wire going from the red wire to a spade conector below. but the wire is missing! thanks for the response

Does the battery light on the dash light up when you turn the ignition on mate?? could be two problems if not,, the bulb could have blown in the clocks which would cause it not to charge cos the curcuit isn't complete and the regulator will not cut in..

The battery light does work, but the altornator needs to be sparked out for it to work. I believe im missing a suppressor or something similar. as you will know you have 2wires red/blue and 4 terminals on the alternator, when i run a wire from the redwire to the spade connector it works fine knocking out 14v. any idea what i will need to put in its place?
