Fuel Guage Problems

Hi All :big_wave:

I've got a fault with the fuel guage on my cabby turbo and the needle drops off completely when I accelerate and come back to the level when I stop?? Been told it could be a bad earth to the clocks but everything else on the clocks work fine?? Checked the wires under the back seat and there all connected correctly although there are 6 wires coming out of the floor and only 4 from the loom (2 spares from the tank) I have the thick pump ones connected correctly the thin brown/black & brown wires are connected together correctly but I have a red/brown & brown from the tank that arn't connected to anything?? I know that all the browns are earths and maybe the red wire is for the trip computer (not fitted) but I'm at my wits end with it,, Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction please..

hope the windscreen washers sorted russ.

does yours happen if you rev while stationary el'v like russes does.

have had a quick look at the dials, there is a transistor sitting betweent the rev counter and fuel guage, and the wire that feeds the rev counter is the green wire from the suppressor....i suppose for a couple of quid I would change the suppressor just to get it out the way, unless you have a set of clocks from someone else you can plug in.

Having a simalar prob with my MK5, as the fuel gauge drops and the fuel light is constantly on..but found if I wiggle the connector plug on the sender unit it settles fine and the light goes out.

So Im just going to cut of the original connector plug and put on female connector spades..

Have to check to see if there is a live feed to the sender??if you connect wiring together in a circuit the fuel gauge should shoot straight up and this elimates the gauge, so it could be you sender unit.

do the brown/red and brown wires go in to a black plug????

if so these are like you said are the trip computer wires

Yeah they do Taz, The plug is like 2 bullet connectors and I have 2 brown wires into the same port.. If they are the fuel comp wire then I'll rule them out eh, Cheers for the info mate :icon_salut_gb:

Hi Sjc, Is the suppressor next to the coil mate? just looked and its been disconnected and the green wires have been joined?? I'll reconnect them before I set off for work 2morrow and see if it makes any difference.. Thought about running a fresh wire from the sender unit to the clocks just to rule the sender out, maybe its that that is faulty?? (I'm stumped) haha.. when i'm stationary it's fine and reads perfect and when I rev when stationary it doesn't move at all, weird eh.. soon as I set off in a gear it drops but never goes higher like Russ's,, Cheers for the info mate I'll try the suppressor and get back to you's with the outcome :icon_salut_gb:

bloody hell could guessed something right.....certainly worth putting the suppressor in circuit mate.

Mick, the feed to the sender comes from the fuel guage, the guage is powered from the transistor in the clocks itself and the sender is a resistor sitting on the -ve side of the circuit.....while I dont know if its the same value...but the sender for the fuel comp is wired in the same manner.....has anyone ever tried swapping them over???
