Guest markeyboy
never done it b4 but in theory connecting the battery should be fine as for the ammeter you will need to connect it in series through whatever cable you want to monitor,
Guest Matt_Norwich
Marks spot on with that, you need to connect it in series over whatever devise or circuit you want to monitor
Guest sjc
has it got its zero in the middle and goes plus and minus amps??

Guest sjc
Balls, not entirely sure then, sorry but read on for how its supposed to operate, but I have never wired one in. The zero in the middle ones should go betwen alternator and battery as the are supposed to tell you which way the current is flowing (a bit like your alternator warning bulb does with voltage) but the ammeter shows how well the system is charging/operating. If the battery is low there will be a high current towards the + side of the meter. If you've got a problem and a component is going to earth or a bit faulty you will see current going from the battery towards the - side of the meter. Mainly it should just sit in the middle. All in all that makes them sound like a handy thing to have, but I'm sure if you put it directly in between the alternator and battery it would melt. On cars that have these fitted as standard I would imagine the meter is acroos some sort of shiunt resistir to measure the current. But from scratch I would just be guessing, sorry.
