Guest s6boy1979
I have had an idle issue on my mk4 efi ever since i bought it 8 months ago. I have change the crank sensor, plugs, leads, changed and clean the icv, changed the ats, map sensor, cam belt, lifters, all filters, did an engine flush, tried redx. Still the same, tool it to a friend at MTS Motorsort and he adjusted the fuel pressure and fuel mixture which made it idle a little better but still not perfect. He sad the mixture adjuster is not working properly. Last night the car drove home fine, parked up and left it for a few hours as had bits to do. I go to move it and it would fire up but then die with in about 5 sec. I managed to get it stay running but now as soon as you touch the pedal it coughs, spluts, back fires and dies everytime. I am thinking the fuel pump has gone and would like any ideas of what else it could be.
Guest Lee81
Sounds like a fueling issue. If the adjuster for the co2 is not working it could be the ecu or wiring fault with the adjuster. This is the most likly cause. If the fuel pump had failed you would not be able to keep the car running. A blockage in the fuel line could cause a similar problem but its usually progressive as oppose to the car being fine and then not when you go to start it. These car always idle bad even when new. There well known for it.
Guest s6boy1979
Is it worth changing the mixture adjusture then to see if that makes any difference?
RobMk4TwinCarb
I played with my pentometer(probably not the right spelling) and just made things worse maybe because I didn't take note of how far I was turning it and which way! I ended up putting another one I had on it which helped but my idle was only a small percentage better than when I started playing.
Guest s6boy1979
I swapped for anothr one i had off the other car and made no difference
RobMk4TwinCarb
Probably not where the fault lies then, do you have another ECU to try ? Other than that check all your wiring as lee said, dont you love old fords !
Guest s6boy1979
Yeah will try that, i know oh the joy, might just get the zetec engine sooner than i thought lol
Guest s6boy1979
Turned out to be a combination of the fuel pump on it's way out and the mixer adjuster not working, so just a case of getting the mixture adjusted as running a bit rich and it will be sorted.
