Guest s11pyk
Hi everyone, ive just got myself a mk4 escort xr3i cabriolet, its an efi on a h reg. problem iv got is when the engine runs it will only do so if i have my foot on the accelerator? if i take it off the revs will drop and it cuts out, this is constant. if you start it it'll fire up then die?, drive it and take your foot off, it dies? this im sure (read hope) is an easy fix. anyone else had a similar problem and know the solution. cheers all. chris. also il stick some pics up when the weather sorts itself out and i can bath her! Hi Apart from the cutting out does it run ok? Is it using a lot of petrol and feels it is lacking in power? If it is doing the above i would say it's the MAP sensor, but if it is not doing this and just cuts out at ideal then i would change the ideal control valve. Hope this helps
Guest s11pyk
hi, thanks for the reply. not sure how much fuel it uses cos iv only driven a few miles home in it. it seems the engine bay has been jetwashed cos its clean and theres water everywhere. even when you take ht lead off a plug its all wet in there. it seemed to run ok, a bit noisy if im honest. the clutch when changing gear makes a wierd noise but not when driving? the starter (i think) was clicking and it wouldn't start. Got some leads on and jumped it and limped back so the battery is on charge for the night so hopefully it'll be alright tomorrow. oh and the temp gauge doesn't work? other than that its great, cant wait for the sunshine haha! Best thing to do with that is to spray the end of all the HT leads with WD40 and do all the electrical plugs just to get rid of the water. If that does not work give i a service if it hasn't had one and If that goes not work change the MAP sensor. The best place to get one is from a place Tomo Ford Parts in Uxbridge. If that does not work change the ideal contral valve which i have a working one if you need it. The clutch, does it make a noise when you push the pedal down? Is the temp gauge not going up at all or is it just not reading properley?
Guest s11pyk
im gonna have a good play today/tomorrow. which haynes manual do i need for the car? the noise on the clutch i think is when pressing it, as if its grinding? il put a seperate post on about it when i get a good drive and have a proper listen. how much would you want for the icv if i need that? and sorry to be thick but where is it so i can give it a clean! im told these efi are easy to work on so hopefully il be ok with it. just want it running right so i can have a play and maybe try for a bit more power. it does pull pretty strong. whats the easiest way to squeeze some ponies out of her? also where is the map sensor? i think il give everything a good going over with the wd40 and some contact cleaner! oh and the temp gauge just seems to go from way below the line when off to on the bottom line when running. it has a seeperate switch for the fan too! The ICV is on the inlet. If your looking at the engine and where it has EFI on the inlet, to the left of that it is bolted to the side. I is a long thing which is held on with 4 bolts and has a plug and a pipe from the rocker cover going to it. I would only want a tenner for it. I know it works fine. The MAP sensor is bolt the the heater air in take. The big black thing at the back of the engine bay. The sensor is a little black thing with a plug and a little vacum pipe going to it. The clutch sounds like the release bearing is on it's way out wich means a new clutch. You can just change the bearing but you might aswell change the clutch as the the box is already off. Guest s11pyk
wounded about the clutch, i thought that just didn't want to admit it! il have a mess later and get back on here see what i can or cant sort out. might be having the icv off you mate, il let you know chers. do you have an efi too? do you rate them or is it worth saving and putting a zetec in rather than spend on what i have? its very tappy! Yeah i have an EFI as well. The CVH is alway a little tappy but if it is bad then the lifters need changing. Try an oil change that might make it a little more quiet. I was lucky as i have one in the garage i am breaking so if i needed a bit i had it. You can get the EFI running nice and can get a litlle BHP out of it with a cam, filter, exhaust, chip things like that but will never give you big BHP. I have got mine running sweet which will do me while i sort out a few other bits then plan on doing 2.1 ZVH converstion and hope to hit around the 300 bhp mark with the right work. Guest taz1787
well if its not idling at all i would be adjusting it so it was idling correctly you can take the idle control valve off and clean it up too first
Guest s11pyk
you will have to excuse my non technical terms but here goes. as a quick fix iv fiddled about with the accelerator cable where it goes through to the throttle bit (where it says efi) it runs now so i think it just needs the cable adjusting properly! its not the quietest thing but runs ok, pleased with the purchase, il get some photos up at weekend! gonna give her a full service and see what happens

Guest s11pyk
Was there a lot of slack in the cable then? not loads, iv pulled the rubber thing right to the end of the plastic covering the cable itself. if that makes sense? it just about idles at a grand now but i reckon hard acceleration would pull it through again. that wont be happening any time soon tho, service first! is there a way of tightening the cable so it can be connected properly and not my dodgy quick fix? got it home now outside my house, looks gorgeous sat there. there's a guy on my street with a mk3 cab, reckon iv got a new friend there, he always gave a filthy look when my mk1 golf cabrio was there. approvals all round this time i think
Guest taz1787
lol adjusting the throttle slightly like said would bring it tighter but it may need a new accelerator cable
Guest s11pyk
lol adjusting the throttle slightly like said would bring it tighter but it may need a new accelerator cable is ther a way of tightening it other than doing what iv done? hope so otherwise its new cable time! If you have adjusted it as far as it goes on the black rubber bit but still need more def sounds like the cable has stretched so means a new cable. You could try and adjust the idle screw which on the right inner wing as you look at the engine, but this should rarely need adjusting though

It might be easier to but one and paint it, that way you will be able to get a good lid and the paint will be fresh. Well if you need any bits of an mfi cab let me know as i have one in the garage in bits.
