Guest daKlone
My Escort Mk4 XR3i refuses to move When I put it into gear, I get nothing but a nasty grinding noise. The clutch appears to work, as I cannot put it into gear without using it and the nasty noise stops when I push it in. The car seems to go into each gear OK too, but I get no drive. The gearbox itself is fine too - it worked in the car I got it from and nothing has changed, just put it into this car. I'm at a loss as to what the problem might be - any suggestions? Guest KRYSS
could your flywheel be slipping ????
Guest daKlone
The flywheel is still firmly attached to the crank AFAIK. I'd have thought if it were loose in any way I'd know about it by now, as the engine runs OK.
Guest hoochydady
did u put oil in the box? thrust baring makes a grinding noise till u press the clutch see if there is still oil in the box and see if ur oil in ur engine is still what it should be maybe a seal has gone and ur cluch plate is cover in oil or it could be stuck try towing it in gear and lifting the clutch ie a towstart se if it frees it but i think its a box off job . Guest mossop1
how about a nackerd cv jiont as they make horible nioses when broke and stops youre car going as just spins the shaft through the jiont.
Guest mikecurd
I agree CV joint (see if one of the shafts spins when the clutch is up) or one of your driveshafts may not be properly engaged with the gearbox, they sometimes pop out if the snap ring has been damaged (or lost) in the past. Guest daKlone
Known good box just fitted, nicely full of oil. Nothing rotates either in gear or out of gear - suggesting its not a CV joint? How would I check if the driveshafts are properly engaged or not?

Guest daKlone
No, I meant that sat on the ground nothing moves - if I get the wheels in the air they rotate slowly and are easily stopped by hand. I'm going to have to take the box out and have a look I think Edited December 12, 2009 by daKlone
Guest daKlone
Had the box out today and the clutch driven plate is KNACKERED! Not worn out (in fact it looks pretty new) but the center splines just run round, all of the springs are broken and there are a few metal bits missing. The flywheel has a couple of pretty deep grooves in it too. I'm guessing the previous owner had some clutch-dropping fun with it before selling it on... So it's a new clutch and a re-finish of the flywheel and we should be sorted
