Guest Mk4 Rustbucket
Hi, i've never managed to be able to get the Mk3 to charge above 13.5v and if the lights and heater are on it doesn't really charge at all. Finally got round to looking at it today and noticed that the blue wire off the alternator multi plug doesn't go anywhere.About an inch from the alternator the wire has a female bullet connector on it with nothing going into it. Put the multi meter on it and it's kicking out 14v so I just need to know where to connect this female connector to. I think it's the starter but want to make sure before I do and blow something! Thanks Gareth

Guest steelcabby
I'm sure that plug fits on the side of the alternator? on a long screw type thing. i have seen some looms with the wire coming from the alternator and meeting a plug there too. similar to that one, but they are normally straight. that wire looks abit short. but like i say. i'm sure it goes to the alternator on a little screw that sticks out

I know the 1 that you mean though. The alternator is connected on my Mk3 by a 3 pronged multi plug, which consists of 2 thick red wires and 1 thinner blue wire. If you follow the wiring away from the plug the blue wire goes no-where and ends in a female bullet connection about an inch or 2 form the alternator. According to the haynes book of lies it should run to the clocks, but why would that stop it charging? The blue wire is kicking out 14v so it must be needing to put that power somewhere
Guest steelcabby
so that blue wire is coming from the alternator?? it should connect to the main loom then. otherwise it won't charge the battery properly. i had the problem with my mk4 not charging properly and it turned out that thin blue wire was all broken up. so i replaced it and it worked perfectly

I'll cut some of the outer cover away further up the main loom when I get a chance to see if I can find the blue wire then run a temporary wire to it from the alternator to see if it makes it charge as it should, if it does then I know what the problem is. Thanks for your help everyone, i'll let you know if it works Gareth
