I would most certainly think its possible to do it in a long weekend. The biggest problem is people stripping everything without inspecting it, I would personally suggest checking the loom as its coming out of an old car which may have had a number of alarms and audio systems fitted through its life... they are usually chopped to pieces, thats the biggest issue Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest ukchopper1 Posted February 11, 2008 Share Posted February 11, 2008 well am doing it as we speak!!, started in november!! i still have the old engine in the car!!! be it all ready to lift!. the old engine is in bits waiting for a part so i can rebuild it!. My loom is in my kitchen well labelled and only issues that scare me are a couple of alarms. Ive ended up as i've stripped the car started restoring all parts that are grubby or broken, as i can only get to it in fair weather and weekends its taking its time, should be worth it when its done!, got a week of next month to have it finished. or 99% done. ready for show season. I Am a novice but have basic skills, have a couple of mates that can do bits that i cant do!, im good with wiring; mates are good with engines!!. if i was just doing a straight swap probly had it done in a couple of days to a week! Guest sandman2209 Posted February 11, 2008 Share Posted February 11, 2008 oh cheers for that guys i got the loom out ov a s2 turbo from a mate from work for nuthin and the ecu aswell my mate says that i wont have to strip all of my existing loom out as apparantly i have only got to strip it out from the fuse box as the loom is the same as the xr3i from there on is this right i know that this bloke knows his stuff when it comes to turbos as hes had stacks its jus not bin labelled up im avin the tappets done on mine on friday i got a chap to do it for nuffin just gonna cost me 40 quid for the gear plus oil and a filter Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest ukchopper1 Posted February 12, 2008 Share Posted February 12, 2008 Am no professional, but from my experience change the whole loom as the ecu's are different. not saying it cant be done! but i imagine it would be a nightmare. all the advice i got before i started was to change the entire Loom. which now makes sense. before you start do as much research, like you are doing. Guest turbocabbie Posted February 12, 2008 Share Posted February 12, 2008 you do not have to use the full loom you can as stated strip it out from the fusebox.. ive got a 2wd cosworth back loom and a purpose made engine loom because of my antilag and water injection. The biggest issue with taking it from the fusebox is the loom is basically 20 years old in many cases and become brittle or damaged... making certain everything works when you chop the loom can be interesting to say the least in many cases. If you are not doing loads of tricks that require specific electrics you are better off using the entire loom imho as its easier and can be checked easily before fitting Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest steelcabby Posted February 18, 2008 Share Posted February 18, 2008 like turbocabbie says, just ask, i've done many a convertion on cabbs etc, would probably take 2 days to do if you haven't done it before. everything is a straight swap and straight forward. just take your time and labell plugs etc etc oh and by the time you have pee'd about stripping the loom from the fusebox you would of change the full loom. i always cut my looms from the drivers side door where the light wires and fuel pump wires go and its quicker and easier than trying to feed it through to the back, but thats up to you. its your first time so make it simple. spread the loom out on the floor and check it over for cuts and nicks etc. oh and broken plugs. then retape the lot so its nice and tidy. i recon if you change the loom you would finish it in about 3-4 hours. me and others that have done it afew times could do it in half that. but its important not to rush it mate. when you do the loom make sure you have the old engine. its your first time and your swapping it anyway. just makes things simple with room to move it about without catching it.
