Escort Cabriolet Club
Hi Peeps !!! :big_wave: As many of you Mk5 and Mk6 owners may be aware, when you turn on you side lights with the ignition off the small 501 bulbs illuminate, but when you turn the ignition on, the headlights come on very low too, how the hell do I stop them from doing this as it will effect my Xenon headlight upgrade, (Guide coming with it too, watch this space !!!) is it a relay I need to rip out or a diode ??? ..........or a bypass ??? You can't realy tell form the pics but you can see the difference !!! Ignition off Ignition on MICK, TONY, ALAN H, HELP !!! :Banane20:
Guest nickscunny
I dont know if you can, its part of the vehicle regulation requirements that you run on a dim-dip system. In otherwords by running sidelights whilst the vehicle is switched on both sidlight bulbs and headlight bulbs will be active. I'm unsure on how to stop this affecting the hid upgrade kits. I should imagine you cant because its part of the intergrated wiring system. But then someone on here may have the answer.........

Escort Cabriolet Club
take the bulbs out that ya dont want, simple lmfao what does it affect then mate, seriously considdering doing the conversion to mine Its as if the headlight bulbs are receiving 5 - 6v form somwhere when the ignition is switched on, thats why they come on dim, pretty pointles as why bother putting the small 501's in ??? It will effect the Xenon kit as it runs on 12 - 35v and it won't opperate propely on 5 - 6v, hence it might damage it, someone must know a way around this, failing that i'll just start taking relays out lol !!! Guest markeyboy
just off the top of my head what about using the 5-6V through a relay that brings on 12V to teh control unit?

Escort Cabriolet Club
any where I can download the wiring diagram??? or can you email it to meare you saying that with just sidelights switched on you are still getting some current go through your dipped bulbs as well? do all mk5/6 do that? can someone else have a look and see if its meant to or its a little glitch on charlzeys. Right Mick, here goes, i'm in the car with the key in the off position, if I turn the headlights on 1 the side lights come on, its the small wedge 501 bulbs, not the headlight bulbs. When I turn the ignition to pre-ingnition where your radio, blowers and HUD warning lights come, on the head lights come on slightly, its the actual headlight bulbs that are semi-lit, if I turn the head lights up one more the main head lights come on full, then if I pull the stork back full beam comes on. All I want is the headlights to stay off when I put my side lights on, if you want I will do a little vid to explain tomorrow, all it is, if I fit my xenon kit it might get damaged with the small flow of electricity form the headlights being on so low on side light mode. Guest sjc
i understand better now, I still need to know of it is a problem with just yours or is it generic to all mk5s. Either way we should be able to sort it, once we know and have a drawing.
Guest sjc
i understand better now, I still need to know of it is a problem with just yours or is it generic to all mk5s. Either way we should be able to sort it, once we know and have a drawing. I did have a little read up on HID (high intensity discharge) I did not find a great deal about troubleshooting installation problems, as all sites just say how easy they are to fit. But i think you are correct in being cautious...the electronic ballast whcih sets the arc (spark) inside the bulb itself may use some 5v components, whcih may be on the egde of operating with the problem you have described, or may cause them to flicker a bit. As the balast is about two thirds of the price of the kit I would like to recommend you to suck it and see. get us a circuit diagram and lets hope one of our mates has a look to see if their headlights do the same as yours. Escort Cabriolet Club
Its a generic feature on Mk5's and Mk6's mate, I think its just to make sure you are seen !!! I have had a Xenon kit on my Rover since Febuary, took 20 mins too fit, VERY EASY, plug in and play, just a matter of putting the buulb in to relace your old bulb and plug the ballasts in with the old wiring plug !!! I have a set next to me, had it for 6 months, got it for the old cab, if you want pics let me know, if you want one let me know as I can get disscout, i'll be doing a guide with piccys when I fit it to the Cab !!! Thanks for having a look for info mate, I have a Haynes electrical scematit of the head light system, its pretty simple until the wires go to the relays lol, i'm lost lol !!!
