Hi everyone, i have just become a proud owner of my escort cabrio..1600cc. Its a R reg but its not running well. Its running high and low revs when its warm and smells like its running very rich when warm too. Im just hoping its not a serious problem. Can enyone advise me on what the reason could be for this please?

Thanks.

You definately have a idle control valve problem as mentioned but you may also have a a inlet manifold/MAF sensor problem. Fix the idle control valve by taking it off and cleaning with wkd 40. If you still have the problem get a new valve.

Once thats sorted see how the car behaves. Diagnotics will pinpoint the other issues with sensor failure. These are common too and most cars I see have both problems.

hello & welcome..i also bought a mk 6 r reg 1.6 escort cabby recently fitted with the zetec li engine....& ive still got exactly the same problem..i replaced the maf..sensor..£35 e bay.@.driven automotive...& i also replaced the idle control valve..@£40.... same supplier..as it seemed to be the next logical step..this was done.. & fitted at around £93 inc labour & vat.k& n air filter & 4x new plugs....so total £180..now all was well..until today..it started on the key at 6 am from cold.. first turn..as usual..then it hunted 3 times..ie dropped to 250 rpm..then up to 850 rpm..brrm..brrm..brrm..with the rev counter dropping & rising..intermittingly..now in traffic it feels as if its going to stall & cut out....its very jerky ..on & off the throttle..kangerooing up the road.not good as its zinc yellow..lol.. .it also uses a lot of fuel..& the rear exhaust sports box is all sooted up ..a sure sign its over fuelling & running rich..it used to do this only when warm ..ie a 1/4 on the temp gauge...now its doing it constantly..but no issues with revs up to 5000 rpm..through the box.....its back at the garage..any ideas??..i love the car but its a pain in the rear end !! how good is the std ecu on this era of ford..will it store any faults??..& what reads it..is it adobe 1..ie first gen??..i wont shove any more money at it..alough a new throttle position sensor,o2 lamba sensor..or camshaft position sensor..is £70 for all three.. whats my next course of action???obviously i,l wait until the ecu has been read..if it can be....its mental..
