i dont think the timing has been right on my 1989 mfi xr3i since i got it so ive finally set it with a timing light but now its pinking badly.the haynes manual says it should be 12 degrees btc which is 3 marks to the left of tdc which is what i set it to.i was wondering if maybe the fuel mixture now needs adjusting or am i doing something wrong?

Depends on the fuel your using. 12 degrees is fine for 97 RON Super but if your running on 95 RON you'll need to knock it back to 8-7 Degrees to stop it deting.

Also note that these cars are using a very old K jetronic bosch system that in most cases isn't providing the right amount of fuel anymore. This is mainly due to the the fuel pressure being lower than it should be which is adjustable with shims on the metering unit. The second is the fuel injectors being partially blocked but they can be cleaned which in most cases returns them to how they should operate.
