Mk 4 Cab Help Please!!??

Hello all

 

Im new to xr3i's and old escorts, iv previously owned 2 mk2 golf gti's.

 

I was looking for a new-old gti a couple of weeks ago when i came across a mk4 cab for sale, so as a bit of an impilse i decided to buy this instead, having no experience in these cars i knew it would be a bit of a risk.

 

Anyway, it has a few niggly problems, exhaust bracket, hood leaking etc which are cosmetic and not hard to do, but when pulling away in 1st gear its a bit juddery, but no problem at all in any other gears, pulling away, changing up/down etc.

 

another problem is the engine is quite loud..tapping sound! could be the tappits, or the previous owner putting in the wrong oil etc!

 

the next thing im going to do is an oil change, oil filter, fuel filter, new distributer cap.

 

The engine however is very clean and alot of the fuel, air lines and pipes look fairly new

 

If anyone has any experiences in the problems listed or has a good idea of what they are and how i can solve these problems i would be very greatful, im reluctant to start cosmetic work on the car until im satisfied that the engine is all good

A rattly CVH? Who'd have thought! Sounds very much like the usual hyd tappets not playing. An oil flush might work but don't hold your breath. However, there's nothing to loose by trying.

 

Did the Mk2 Golfs use K-Jet? If so then at least that's no stranger to you. If not, then there's a dombed down guide to its workings on my website. Click on the link in my sig and you'll soon find it on the front page.

I'm a year in front of you,I suggest you pull the camshaft out,no need to take the head off.

Your judder may be a worn CV joint,hope it's not the clutch.

Ultimatlly do a decoke & valve regrind.
