Guest petethetechie
Hiya All, Ok, so I just bought me a '96 Cab and am lovin the sunshine we got just now. But my roof is just random. I've just replaced the impeller on the pump fitted it all up and cool! my roof now goes down, but whoa there, not so cool it don't go back up So bit of investigation on the forums lot's of people seem to have similar hassles. Check out my relays or at least the 3 in the boot and they all get a bit of a clean-up. Now the roof goes up a lil bit then nothing. Wait for the cars to stop going past and try the switch again and no noise from the pump. Ignition off n on again push the switch, pump is whirring and a tiny bit of movement up but no more than an inch then nothing, no noise from pump, wont go up or down. Turn it all off, open the bypass put the roof back up by hand close the bypass, electrics on, push the button roof goes back down. But same again going up lil bit of movement pump whirs then stops then nothing in either direction. So, question is, is this the thermal cut out that's stuffed and is it the inch square silver bit that plugs in right by the pump? Or is there a different problem that the thermal cut out kicks in because of? Fluid level is good, new impeller, new seal and no obvious signs of leaking. Guest shaun
yes that should be thermal cut out, Have you tried swapping relay's around?

Guest petethetechie
swapped two relays in boot round (the ones hiding behind the body panel next to the electric arial motor)now the roof goes down for about 2 to 4 seconds and stops (no whir from pump) turn it all off n on again, then the roof closes pukka but wont open. Guest spenny
Could be that the pump & lines need bleeding of air.there is a specific way to do it.
Guest shaun
try touch/wiggling the muti plug wires on back of switch. Had my mk6 SI do simalar thing and switch had dodgy switch connection.. Did you put the pump back together the right way and not block anything? (just in case it's in the pump) Was the pump working ok before? Guest petethetechie
So having done a tour of car parts shops of the south west to find that no one seems to sell the relays for a mk6 escort cab I pull on to the driveway pop the latches on the roof go to the boot, swap all three relays round for about the 100th time get in the car flick the switch and hey presto roof goes down, press the switch again, roof goes up! What the hell is that about? Im gonna try it again later to to see if its a fluke (fingers crossed). But if it does stay "fixed" then sweet! Many thanks Shaun and Spenny for getting back to me.
