Im upgrading my mk5b brakes and suspension setup as frankly its awful lol. at the moment it has standard brakes but as im going to be upping the power in the future to about 170bhp an upgrade will be needed. I was thinking about either a cossie conversion or st170 does anyone know which is easier/better? my suspension atm is lowered 60mm on just springs and 17" alloys. the ride is awful and it doesnt inspire confidence. what setups would people recommend? Guest gavintwopies Posted August 18, 2010 Share Posted August 18, 2010 One of the brake conversions i always do/go for is fitting the st170 discs 300mm 4 stud discs with a set of mk3 mondeo calipers as the mondeo ones are also 300mm std on the full range apart from the top power versions narf cuts the cost of the conversion down from using the full st170 stuff, about £100-120 for all the bits you need on be-gay deliverd.... Guest fasteddy Posted August 18, 2010 Share Posted August 18, 2010 (edited) thanks for the help. does anyone have a particular make of shock/spring combination that works well? am going to be getting poly bushes too as mine are gone. i dont mind a firm ride but at the moment the front in particular has no give at all. i can push down on the front end and it barely moves although the back is quite soft (i think that is one of the reasons it understeers so much). The calipers are almost a direct fit but you will need to put some 1mm spacers in (thin washers) and drill the hubs out with a 12mm drill as they have m12 mounting bolts not m10 like the std ones. Do you know where i can get these wishbones from with poly bushes already fitted? I have also read it can be a gearbox mount gone or the diff so will probably still get it checked over first. Guest Rustler Posted August 26, 2010 Share Posted August 26, 2010 Hi M8 If your upgrading your brakes and have'nt fitted "Braded Hoses" yet , then have a gander at www,brake-lines.co.uk they do "HEL" braded hoses with all s/s fittings and any colour covering to the braid and top spec'also, for about the same price of Bog Std' Goodridge hoses. Their also doing a good discount now and will also send you a tech'draw' of them if you ask. GGGGGGGreat people to deal with too... Also you might try ..mtsebc..for EBC Turbo Discs and Greenstuff ,Yellowstuff or really fast drive Redstuff....e-mail TONY you'll find him a great help....hope this may be of some use to you M8. If you go to "mtsebc" site ..ebay..#..350332610051..you,ll see that their discount is the best avail, if you email Tony ,he'll give you the best prices for whatever discs or pads you want............lets know how you progress with your upgrade,there's a lot of us out here interested ......................... Guest Lee81 Posted August 27, 2010 Share Posted August 27, 2010 I have a pair of ST170 calipers for sale. £100 plus postage avaiable if you need it. Surplus to requirements now as I bought a good car instead. The best thing to do is get new mintex discs and pads to go with them. There reasonable priced and should be fine for fast road use. Suspension wise your best off with a 30-40 drop with the 17's and a matched shock. The spax krypton gas units are what i've had before. There adjustable so wont be rock hard. Guest Rustler Posted August 29, 2010 Share Posted August 29, 2010 Yea.. I had similar probs.with my '92 MK5 130bhp RQB engined cabby. I discovered that some escorts had as OE RS2000 brakes and other gear.Nobody seemed to know which bits were right for the car . I started with "Burton Power" page 122 ( they mention ST170 in their application chart)( You should get this info on their site)... the GOODRIDGE SITE may be of some help, and Brake Lines also have a application chart. If it were me I'd get my calip's and rotors fitted then take some measurements,note which fittings are required both ends,..then get back to Brake lines and ask for a few Tech Draw's for lines with similar spec' to your req'ts....I found them really helpfull.......Hope this may be of some use,sorry I can't be more specific,..."There's Got To Be" many other guys out ther who can be of greater assistance to you than me?.......the only thing youll lose out now is the 10% discount which ends on 31st Aug....but thats only 6quid or so Rustler .......The Oldest Cabbier.......... If they are it says you need to fit spacers on the banjo union bolt (not sure what that is lol) other than that it all seems pretty straight forward and it looks like i can use escort brake lines. Will wait now until I have the new calipers things might make a bit more sense then. I also have the added bonus that my clutch is going now too. the biting point is nearly on the floor lol. Were you able to have a deal with LEE on his 170 calipers?.. Just a thought, have you requested a 2010 parts & accesssories catalouge, from "Burton Power", it's a bloody good source of info, reference, and a good read, and the best part .....IT'S FREE, just need to get on-line and submitt a request... I need to try and find somewhere local who can supply and fit an uprated clutch, was thinking of giving it a go myself but dont want to risk being without my car. Guest Rustler Posted September 4, 2010 Share Posted September 4, 2010 Hi Again The "Dreaded Clutch", ....../Had a problem wiyh my Kia Sorento clutch a couple of years back whilst We were in the UK I finally got it fixed under guarantee,.....BUT...whilst fighting King Kia ,spoke to a local .."Mr CLUTCH" depot. They were prepaired to replace the clutch with a H/D one that I could get sent over from GERMANY, far quicker and less expensive than anywhere else in Cornwall..................If your interested there's a depot in CHELMSFORD (0845078 3905) who'll fit a clutch or H/D one supplied by yourself from "BURTONPOWER" (no M8 I don't work 4 either of thers CO's or get commision) in Double Quick Time...give "Graham" a bell there ,might be some use to you......(NO Guarantee if you supply C/Plate etc) but u would'nt if you fitted it yourself !!!!
