Guest wildsquaddie
Hi, has enyone got any top tips??? I spent all day yesterday trying to replace the outer roof liner of my cab, things where going great, however when I came to tighten the rear roof tensioning cable it would not pull the outer liner under the lip at the rear, I tightend the cable to its max hoping that the cable would eventually pull the roof liner under the lip. It didnt, instead it snapped, so did the new one that I bought, so after snapping two cables I'm stuck with no roof. It's on a 1986 Mk4. There must be someone out there with some inside info on how to do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help.....
Guest cbigjaf
You have tto make a special little tool to tap the wire in as you tighten it. I used a wedge of wood that I sanded very smooth about an inch across (kinda flathead screwdriver shaped).Tighten the cable then starting from the middle of the back tap the wire into the lip and work your way towards each side in turn, then tighten a bit more and repeat until you get the cable totally enclosed by the roof. It's pretty tricky and needs to be done right because if you don't then a couple of years down the line you will find the roof shrinks and pulls it out again. Best get a pro to do it if you are not sure of yourself. Hope this helps.

Guest wildsquaddie
yes, how embarrassed was I after i snaped to rear wires, my wife came out to the garage and said why dont you use a wooden door wedge to knock it up inside the lip, I told her not to be daft, I later took her advice and done it exactly the way you described. The roof is on now, I think in the end I done a pretty good job (even the wife likes it) every whre fits and is nice an taught, the roof goes up and down with ease. The new roof came with the car and I got the wires from EBay 15 quid for the rear wire and about 5 for the sides. I found a brilliant step by step guide on how to change the outer roof liner on the Mk1 golf website, it is more as less exactly the same to change the Mk1 golfs roof as it is to change the Mk 4 Cab. It really was a very good walk through talk through with some great pics. Cheers for your help anyway. I will post some pics of new roof soon
