Guest DJMARDY
Hi everyone, I'm after some advice please. My MK4 Escort Cabriolet Ghia is stuttering/ judders through low revs and some times cut out completely when I'm slowing down approaching junctions, etc. It also stalls when I pull away unless I keep the revs right up. Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers
Guest username
A video might help as well as any details of what you have/haven't tried yet, servicing etc. also what engine & is it carb or fuel injected (if so, mechanical or electronic injection)? First things I would suggest is to make sure all servicing is up to date & check the plugs/leads (and dizzy cap/rotor arm if it has them). Also a compression test would potentially be useful to see whats going on with the mechanical health of the engine as the description sounds like a misfire at low revs which could be many things. Should be able to give better suggestions with more info & hearing/watching a video & with results of compression test but hopefully it's a simple fix Edited March 21, 2017 by username
Guest DJMARDY
Hi, thanks for your reply! 1987 cabriolet ghia 1.6 carburettor, not injection. Auto choke. Have replaced all filters, plugs, leads and distributor cap. Will try and get a video but the car Idles fine so will have to get a passenger to film! It hesitates and bounces along when accelerating and then suddenly springs into life! Cheers
Guest username
If it's idling fine and acting up on the move I'd say based on what I know now that it's possibly dirt in one of the jets causing it, or maybe a dodgy accelerator pump. Certainly if all the ignition bits are in order and that hasn't cured it then I'd look to cleaning and rebuilding the carb (also fitting an in line fuel filter to prevenmt any crap getting in there in future, if it's not already got one) Also worth checking all the vacuum hoses & breather pipes etc are sealing properly and not split as that could cause a weak mixture & similar problems to yours Edited March 21, 2017 by username
