I would check your supply and ground/return leads to your starter motor/ engine block. If in doubt replace them, measure the approx length and halfords do a variety of universal battery/ starter cables. Or you could put a jump lead between your battery neg pole and the engine block to test the ground side and your battery poss. terminal and starter poss terminal if you are confident to do so. Could be a weak starter motor, if you kown the battery is good and the main power leads are ok then there's not much other than the starter it can be.

Does it mainly have the problem when the engine is hot?

ok guys before anyone condemns there starter motors on this one. i have done a lot of work on trying to trace the same fault for 2 years and i finally found the problem to these damn mk5s and its simple. remove the lower dash panel under steering colomun and you now have access to the fuse boxif you look under the fuse box you will see 3 think wires going to the fuse box. if you use a 10mm socket to remove each wire and once the wire is removed ( be very carefull these are heavy lives to the fuse box) if you pinch the threaded post between finger and thumb and it can be wiggled at all you have found your problem. on the other end of that post is a flat blade which is soldered to the main fuse board, and what happens is that the current passing thru these posts heat up and expand and crack causing no end of non starting issues, lazy starter motor problems, battery draining and fllat batteries. also other untold electrical issues. to rectify these problems is simple but unless your good with electronics i suggest a reconditioned fuse box, i have studied these fuseboxes in great detail and i am now reconditioning the fuse boxes but as they are now in short supply i can only do them for owners on a part exchange basis. i am located in northumberland but for £50 i will send a fully reconditioned fusebox including postage. the problem i found is that all second hand fuse boxes will or have the same problem as it is a common problem on all mk5s. if someone was to open the fusebox up you are faced with a dilema of splitting the curcuit boards as they are connected with about 28 pins per side and soldered both sides. alternatively if you just wanted your fuse box reconditioned i can do that for you and the price would be cheaper, the only problem would be that it would take longer for it to be returned as i have stocks of fuse boxes which can be sent out return post on recieving your old fuse box.
