hi all im relatively new here so hope you dont mind the asking for help, i have a 1986 mk4 cabbie which is sometimes failing to start. The problem started this sat gone when i decided to do the tappets and valve stem seals all of which were done no problem, i changed the battery terminal bolts also. Started her up and the tapping was gone, took her for a short drive came back and it was hunting, adjusted the mixture alittle and seemed ok so proceeded to have a bbq. Next morning she started fine and i drove the 50 miles home after 10 of these i had to brake hard, battery warning light and oil light came on and it tried to stall i bumped it and carried on it done it again a few minutes later. got it back home and it wouldnt start at all. put the charger on the battery and in 30 mins tried it again and it was fine for the rest of the day. today went to work it was fine came home and it wouldnt start. seems to be when on a slope?? please help im at a loss. p.s battery has been checked and is ok

Sounds like a charging issue. Remove the wires on the alternator and clean the terminals up. Also make sure that the thick cable that comes from the alternator to the battery where you have fitted a new terminal is a good connection. A poor connection will work sometimes but then fail whilst driving usually

If the battery keeps going flat and you need to charge it then it the charging system. A faulty starter will cause starting issues but it wouldn't make your car stall whilst driving. When the problem occurs again put the headlights on and heater fan if they go dim and fan turns slowly within a few seconds then the battery is discharged.

Corroded and dirty terminals on the starter can also be a problem so clean them up while your there.

hi had same problem .if you look down by the starter motor theres a thin blue wire which comes from you alternator.this is useually tapped together with another wire which goes to your stater you should find this stiff and not flex due to heat off down pipe .there might be a conetion pull apart or replace the wire or cut it back and make new conection.should work fine hope this helps chris
