Mk6 Calypso Rad Fan / Temp Gauge

this is a MK6 calypso model with the 16v zetec (90 PS model) don't know what that is in old money. The temp gauge has never worked. I have just fitted a new temp sender unit. The one that screws into the top of the themostate housing near the coil pack on the passengers side of the engine. The temp guage needle now moves. But as the needle just gets out of the inital whote block, the radiator fan kicks in. the rad fan is not permanetly on. But either the rad fan is cutting in too early, or the temp gauge needle is still not registering correctly. How do I tell which it is?????

The top hose to the radiator is warm / hot, but not scalding hot, and the scuttle panel (where you vin plate is directly above the radiator is warm as well.

have you tested the thermostat?

Could you elaborate please? Do you mean the thermostate that acts like a "gate" and at a set temperature opens up allowing engine coolant to circulate through the radiator. Or do you mean the sensor that screws into the radiator top hose which has a blue plug, that at a pre determined temperature switches on the fan?

yeah the thing that opens when the coolant gets to a certain temp, take it out and put it in boiling water to see if it opens or not.

does it overheat at all?

no it isn't over heating, the radiator fan does not run all the time. And the thermostate is not permanetly open as the top pipe to the radiator goes not get hot straight away.
