Guest Ryan_Wales
Ive had my 1988 Cab few a few months now tho have hardly used it. In the last week I have given it a service, changed the valve stem seals, spark plugs and fitted a new starter motor. Before fitting new starter motor the car would be a problem when starting and now its has been replaced it still pauses before turning over. I turn the key and it appears to do half a turn, pauses for 2 seconds then starts !! Is this a common thing ?? Ive checked all conections of starter motor etc and they appear fine !! ?? !! ?? Any ideas ?? Secondly I have taken it out for a spirited drive to blow off the cob-webs as it were but when driving it hits its rev limit at just under 5000 rpm, is this just a case of needing to re-tune her so to speak or is it another underlying problem ?? Ive had different advice to solve these problems but thought this would be the best place to getthe correct answers, any help greatly recieved. Regards, Ryan. P.S. I now have original wheels so once fitted shall update pictures.
Guest Lee81
The wiring from the ignition to the starter degrades badly and wont give a good supply to the the solenoid and realy within the starter motor. Replace this from the ignition to the motor and that should sort the first issue. The rev counter on these cars don't work that well. It could be under reading. Most MOT testers have a ignition clamp that gets the reading for rpm. So compare it to whats shown using that. The other problem i encountered is that some pattern trigger arms are crap. The pin will kick out well before 6500 rpm. It will be one of these two problems for sure.
gingergman
sounds like the starter is lazy, most mk4s have that issue, its just a feture of the escorts lol, ive never really known how to sort it as its a commen thing, but try what lee said, if it works let us know! Guest rodge
A new battery sorted my turn over sluggishness. Sounds like your problem might not be this though.
Guest Ryan_Wales
Cheers for these pointers I shall try new wiring from ignition when i get 5 and see if this solves problem. Half the battle is not using it very often and when I do its a case of ' I must have a look at that, it was doing that before ' - my memory isnt the best !!
