Hi dean what you using as a earth (thick brown wire i think on my mk4)red is live and yellow is ignition live my have these mixed up but 1 is for the memory to store your radio station etc...you may find red goes to yellow and yellow goes to red....

hope this helps and i got it right

As long as you have the earth and the live feeds going into the radio correctly other problems are likly to be the the radio itself. Worth checking with a multimeter that there are not other live feeds into the radio on its other cables. Eg. speaker, electric aerial wire etc.

Radios do get very hot especially on the back where the cooling fins are but if its hot enough to melt plastic etc then definately something wrong
