Garage Recommendation Pls

Hi all,

New to the forum, I recently acquired a 1984 Escort Cab 1.3. 123K. She's been owned for the last 20 years by my girlfriends Dad. I owned a couple of XR3i's when I was younger and I am a bit of a car nut, so jumped at the chance to own this. The bodywork is excellent, as is the underside. Interior is a mixture of bits but not in bad shape. When I got her a few months ago I spent hours tidying up cosmetic stuff, just putting simple things right and giving stuff a basic check over.

What I really want to do is give it a proper mechanical once over and refresh for when I bring her out of storage in spring. We would like to use her and get her out and about in the sun!

Engine generally feels and sounds a bit tired, gear linkages are shot, jumps out of reverse. Sounds like the lifters need doing - no major smoke surprisingly. Bit lumpy on tick over - pulls ok... basically a CVH with 123K on the clock!

I am pretty handy with a spanner, but it really needs to go somewhere where I can leave it, get it inspected properly by expert and have the work done. Perhaps even a bit of a rebuild if needed inc the gearbox.

I am looking for recommendations please, I am in Nottingham and have searched and can't find anything around here. I am happy to travel, could anyone be so kind to recommend a decent place to take it, not looking for the cheapest, just someone who knows what they are doing and can be trusted.

Thanks all & great forum! I will add some pics.

I am in the exact same position. I know it running lumpy is probably the valves. I have does this job and it always cures it. They way to go is to get hardened valve seats and get new valves. I have tried lead substitutes and somehting called Spitefire a few pellets added to the tank or in line. This was just snake oil. The 5th jumping out is the same situation I have got and parts are longer avaiable I am told and several gearbox so called gurus have told me they wont touch it! As for the linkage well good luck with that. I have tried all sorts but really you need to get the gear rod bushings renewed. Alas in this country most of the mechanics who knew thier Fords have retired or died! My uncle was head tech at Ford Motorsport but alas he has moved on to the great Dealership in the sky. If you find someone do let me know I will do like wise too. Good luck
