Calypso Cab
Hi I've just replaced the head gasket on my Mk6 1.6 zetec Cabriolet, put it all back together, and it won't idle, just revs up on initial start up, and stalls. Throttle response is terrible, but if you floor it you can get it to catch up, and then you have to play it like a Wah pedal to keeping it going. Also when you manage to keep it running it backfires on Cylinder 4. I changed crank sensor as had similar problem on my Land Rover Freelander, and this cured the problem, but doesn't seem be the case this time, only thing left to do is to take the Cambelt back off, and turn crank 180, or 360 degrees to see if my valve timing is out ( another Freelander trick lol) any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Ian71
Was it running ok before you changed the head gasket ?
Calypso Cab
Yes Ian71 it was running fine, never had a fault with it running, just this now, and I've put everything back as it was. It's a bit of a tricky one, and worst thing is my OBD II reader won't link to the car :‘-(
Ian71
Silly question, did you check the gasket was in exactly the right place,i.e not covering any of the holes, failing that will have to check everything you put back on to see if all small hoses are all back on,mine are all cvh engines but small hoses leaking around the throttle body area make mine run rough like you are explaining. Good luck.

Paul Grainger
Could just be a vacuum pipe off. Check the one around the front near the thermostat housing and the T piece as it goes over the gearbox and around the back. Cam timing is critical on these engines. Did you use the cam locking plate to check the timing? Also there are two timing marks on the crank pulley. You need to use the second one which is an about 20 degrees after the first. Good luck
Calypso Cab
Update : been kicking myself a bit, turns out it was the inlet manifold gasket WARNING : when fitting new inlet manifold DO NOT ! Throw away the original green rubber inlet port seals, as the manifold gasket doesn't make up for the gaps that are filled with the seals ( nobody told me this) massive airloss hence the backfire, and rough idle problems. So for anyone else which has experienced the same problems, after taking of the manifold gasket check the green rubbers seals are there. (Now to solve the case of the burning temperature sender). Thanks to all who have helped me, and hope this of use to anyone experiencing similar problems.
