Guest MattJrr
Hi, I have had my 1993 mk5 1.6efi for a couple of months and love it, however it has recently developed a fault which has made it unusable. On random occasions it will refuse to start on the key, it turns over but won't fire, however it will bump start down a hill easily. It does this at random, sometimes starting normally after being left for a while. Last night it started on the key so I decided to take it for a run around the block, all went well until I returned home and it wouldn't switch off! I could actually switch off the ignition and remove the key but it kept running. In the end I had to purposely stall it to stop it, but even then the ignition wouldn't switch off, so I restarted the car and tried switching off again and this time it behaved normally. I'm guessing it's an electrical fault, but beyond that I'm stumped!. Any suggestions will be much appreciated!. Thanks, Matt.
Paul Grainger
I would start by looking at the ignition switch itself and the ignition relay on top of the fuse box. Test them and go from there.......

Alvaro
I have a very similar problem with mk5 1991. After trying several things I made a jumper connection with a switch. When the fault occurs I put 12V directly to the pump. I know it is not the most professional solution but the car starts and does not stop. I have discarded that it is a problem of the relay, I changed it, and also of the pump, since in this way it always works. I suspect that it is a problem with the fuse box or wiring but I have not found adequate electrical diagrams to analyze this fault.
