lincolncity
Hi, I do not have the key for my glovebox. Does anyone know how I might get one made for the lock or what can be done etc? Mk4
Guest username
Strange, they're normally the same as the door/ignition lock :? perhaps the key has worn over time along with the more often used locks but it's now out of "sync" with the glovebox. You could try getting a new key cut if the one/s you have show signs of wear. If not, then you'll have to sort something else out with it. You could probably dismantle the lock barrel and modify it to fit your key, there's some good youtube videos on adapting various locks including Tibbe/Ford but basically all you need to do is take the barrel apart (keeping the key in the barrel when you withdraw it from the outer part if possible to avoid bits going missing).and then making sure the key is fully home in the lock, use a dremel to grind the brass pins back flush with the barrel surface. If there happens to be a number on the lock barrel you could have a key cut to the number (also guides on how to DIY a Tibbe key off the numbers on youtube). I'd try and get it to match the ignition though so there's only one key for the car. Not that the lock makes the glovebox any more secure really as the handle can be ripped out easily enough, but it's nice to have these things working. lincolncity
My keys for the car and fuel cap are tibbe type but the glovebox lock is like the old cortina, Capri type key and lock.

iansoutham
The glovebox key was only used on the mk3 as far as I am aware, hence the TX key design. A lot of people do retrofit the lock though as hey fit the same. I have one in our mk4 cabby. Any mk3 key should technically work as the barrel only uses a couple of tumblers, the rest are blanks. Hi Ian, they were standard fit on Mk4 Ghia and XR3i. They still used TX keys on the Mk4 Glovebox.
Guest Glenn65
My Mk3 uses 1 key for all including the glove box. Sounds unusual to have a separate key just for the glove box unless it's been changed over the years

Do you have a dash instrument cluster surround, the black plastic thing that's clipped and screwed in that has holes for the switches, coin tray and electric mirror switch?
