i need the ratchet and cable replacing on my 1990 xr3i cabby.

haynes manual says pull some clips off and slide shaft out, is that all there is too it as everywhere says its a pain of a job to do?

any advice on doing it? i been told to take drivers seat out, any other tips?

its hard to get gears, then the ratchet clicks and its fine for a few presses then goes hard to get a gear again, tried putting a washer or 2 on the box end of the cable but no difference so guess i need to change them.

I have done this job so many times, It is back breaking and a real chore of a job, just pay some garage its well worth the money and then some. I took the seat out as well however you got to be slim, trim and agile which I aint no more. The last time I did this job it took me 6 hours, and then the spring clip pinged out and the whole assembly came off, lucky there were no cars, I had no brakes, no clutch pedal. I banked it on a round about got the RAC to tow it to the garage, and they alleged they had done the job and the same thing happened to me on the way back. I was lucky then as just as I got off the motorway and came home the whole assembly came off. I had to sue the RAC and Garage in the end, but it took 8 months of legal work! When you do fit a rathet and pawl make sure it is a genuine Ford part. other ratchets just fail or will be noisy and notchey. My uncle who was the Workshop manager said this was the worst job and they used to give it to the youngest and most agile mechanic and bought him a round of drinks all night long for doing it! I know I was that mechanic. I would rather fit a new hood, or take out the engine and gearbox then do this job!

Would it not be easier to remove the dash to make it simpler? The dash comes out quite easy on mk4's.

I need to look at mine, but I will end up doing the ratchet whist the dash is out.

loom sorted. fitted a fiesta OFAC engine loom, easy job, only has 7 wires to join to escort loom!, problem is back to clutch, i did the ratchet while dash was out, felt ok when i put it back together, but now the dash is in i can see its not adjusting so i cant get any gears. is there something im missing or has something gone wrong?

when i put it together i saw if you pulled the pedal up it released the adjuster, now the pedal wont let me lift it.

cant get the pedal to go back together, when its out its fine and adjusts, as soon as i put the assembly in place the paw is open and not taking up the slack, its moveing the clutch arm at the gearbox about 10-15 mm,

what the hell am i doing wrong?
