hi, need some information from those in the know.. I need a new roof fitting to my mk3 and doesn't seem to be anyone in the Lincolnshire area prepared to fit one although did have a quote of £560 just to fit which I thought seemed a little steep. have any of you guys or gals attempted to fit one yourselves and if so how did it go. cant find a video of how to fit one anywhere so would be going in blind. what glue do you need to use and where does the glue need to go. ive got all new tension cables for sides and back. I'm not bad with my hands but don't want to make a pigs ear of it. really seem to be getting nowhere fast and its started to get a little annoying. any help/ advice please . thanks

I DIY'd the roof skin on our Mk5 and it wasn't technically difficult at all, following the great guides downloaded from here. That said, it was pretty physically demanding & I shed a LOT of sweat over the whole job.

Really, as long as you're fit and able plus fairly good with your hands as you say (and exercise common sense/double checking before you cut or staple anything etc) then there's nothing stopping you from doing it yourself.

Having said that, I seem to recall after finishing our one I did say that if we could've afforded it I would have had it fitted professionally with hindsight... But then again, I keep feeling that it'd be a lot easier second time round! :/

Up to you really, but I would say you can get as good as pro results fitting it yourself and if money is in shorter supply than time then DIY is certainly an option. As for glue, I can't really recommend a brand as the one we used was sh1te and needs redoing sometime. I have heard good things about 3M spray contact adhesives so that'd be a good start.

hi Paul

I haven't fitted one myself but did watch the guys from southend fit mine and it didn't look that bad (I'd do it myself if I needed another) they used a tin of contact glue the hood comes pretty much marked out and once you remove the old one you can see where it all goes I think the worst bit looked like getting the cable around the back in and right so it looks good (they knocked it in with a plastic dolly).

I'm sure there must be people on here that have fitted one and they will help guide you in the right direction
