Sounds like 'piston' slap maybe. When the engine warms up the pistons expand more than the steel liners around them and the noise or rattling volume lessens. Possible more accurate diagnosis will be to get a compression check, also if it is using, not losing, oil, this may indicate worn rings, and pistons. Now the bad news, only cure will most likely entail reboring and new pistons. Other possibility if you've not already done this is to measure the valve clearances, usually a rhythmic tap rather than a clatter/rattle. If you do get the reboring done please please invest a bit more and renew the big end and main bearing shells while you have the engine apart. And check the clutch for wear on the friction plate. Easier doing these jobs now and not repeating the same work 6 months from now!

Good Luck,

Nick, mk 5, 1.8ltr c1991

WOW. Just jump straight in at an engine rebuild. The valve clearancies are hydraulic arent they. Surely start with possibility of hydraulic lifters before stripping down the whole engine.
