Guest rosem17
ABS light on but not sensor....could be a relay but don't know which one? Just that it's under steering wheel. Also brake pedal not returning properly so could it be that?
Guest username
What year, theres at least 2 different ABS systems on cabbies over the years. Also does the light stay on from the moment you turn the key, or does it come on & go out but then come back on when you start to drive? Not sure what you mean by the brake pedal not returning properly but I'd make sure the brakes are right mechanically/hydraulically before chasing the electronics just in case it is related. Welcome by the way, shame the weather's not better for getting out and fixing/driving the things!
Guest rosem17
Thank you. She is a 1990 H Reg. The light flickered to begin with but now it's constant. I checked the ABS belt and that seemed right enough plus cleaned contacts. I have been told a possible relay under steering wheel but not sure which one out of them. Thanks for your help
Guest username
ABS belt? not sure I understand... Ours has 2 channel ABS driven by an electric pump/valve block under the master cylinder, do you mean the alternator belt? That drives the alternator and PAS pump (if power steering fitted). I guess it could cause a problem if the charging is affected, but you'd have other issues related to low voltage too like bad starting. If you have the same system as ours then there's 2 fuses related to the ABS, fuse 2 and fuse 15, both 30 amps. The 2 relays are on the back of the fusebox when you drop it down, R4 is dark green and relates to the ABS electronics and R5 is Violet and covers the ABS pump. Also worth checking the fusebox itself as they're notorious for getting cracked solder joints over time and causing all manner of weird electrical gremlins. I would, however, attend to the mechanical & hydraulic side of the brakes before looking into the ABS. As although I'm still unsure exactly what is happening when you say the pedal doesn't return properly, I'd not be happy with the pedal not feeling right and it could be part of the problem anyway. Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
The old abs like what WAS on mine and some other mk4s was run off two belts on each driveshaft to two modulators just above. I had a flickery light then it was on constantly. Turned out the end of one of the sensors had snapped off. That old system is crap and leaves you with brown pants if you lock up and it kicks in lol. I took it off ages ago. Frees up more room in the bay too as no matter what you want to do they're in the way lol.
