Guest Glenn65
Trying to suss what's up? When ticking over it runs as sweet as anything, and as long as the temperature doesn't go up, it drives fine. The issue is when the temp goes up, needle goes above half way, it starts to run like a sick pig, back firing and no power. It started when I put a fresh tank in. I've cleaned the carb out and put an inline fuel filter on. But still the same. Next step is new plugs and leads & im going to put in a manual fan switch to keep the temp down. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas of what might cause it. As I said, it'll drive all day every day as long as the temp doesn't rise. Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
A fresh tank of fuel or a new tank itself? I had a similar issue on a fiesta. Investigate the distributor and the little module on the side.....
Guest Glenn65
It was a fresh tank. Well I took her for a spin tonight keeping an eye on temp gauge, it never went above half way, probably about 40% (if you know what I mean) and when it got there I put the heater on full pelt, and I did about 100 mile round trip to coast and back. No probs at all. It's defo a heat thing, so I'll see how I get on with a manual fan switch.

Ian71
Check inside the thermostat housing, there is a small valve which gets blocked/gumed up perodically, this advice comes from a senior ford technician i know. All cvh engines do run hot,i fitted twin fans on my rs turbo, wired one to thermo and one to a switch on the dash which i turn on as soon as i get in a traffic jam so the temp stays cool ,the only prob with this is the fan does tend to drain the battery so you need to keep your battery well charged. Good luck.
Guest Glenn65
I'll give that a check at the weekend, but like that, a 2nd fan wouldn't go amiss. It has certainly knocked my confidence in going any distance which is a shame. I'm sure I'll get a solution in place before too long
Guest username
Sounds very likely to be an ignition problem IMO, either coil/leads/amplifier or less likely cap/rotor arm breaking down when they get hot enough. can't hurt to swap them for new anyway chances are the components are all old & if it doesn't cure the issue then you can keep the old bits as spares in the boot. Failing that, how are your fuel lines run in the engine bay? If you ran any new pipes or disturbed the old ones make sure they don't run too close to the engine/exhaust anywhere as it could conceivably boil the petrol and cause a vapour lock. And lastly make sure the fuel pump is in good working order. One thing I know for sure is that although a manual fan override switch may help and is a good failsafe to have, it's not going to cure the underlying issue. After all, the CVH ran hot when new and didn't do this trick so there's something not right. Best of luck sorting it Edited August 22, 2016 by username
Guest Glenn65
Thanks username, I'm working through things a bit at a time to find it, as I agree the fan is a cover up repair. It's just frustrating as it ran a dream, and still does... I'll keep the thread posted.
Guest Glenn65
Well, to follow on for this, after a lot of mucking about, turns out it was water in the fuel. After re-filling the tank with fresh fuel, the cars running fine. I've tried to simulate fault and all good. I've since been stuck in traffic coming back from shows, and the guage has risen up, but no misfire or loss of power. Phew!! 2nd fan (cheap 9" fan off flea bay) worked a treat, but only used it to try it out, as it may come in handy for the summer.
