Calypso Project

Hi all, I'm fairly new here and this is my first proper post. So far I've been spending a lot of time reading through other threads and getting some really good ideas from what's going on in here so firstly I'd just like to say thanks to everyone

I got a 1998 Calypso for my Son just before Christmas. Its an automatic, 1.6 16V and only had 57000 on the clock. It needed work, but was driveable so we got the train down from Glasgow to Croydon to go pick her up and drive her back to Sunny Scotland.

I've been quite impressed so far. The amount of paperwork that came with the car was brilliant and we spent a whole day putting it all into chronological order into a folder to get a better picture of the history of the car. The first owner only did 3,500 miles in the first 5 years

The power steering was the first hurdle and after trying all over to obtain the pipes, i relented and went to Ford, and a new pipe was manufactured for me (for a small mortgage) and the power steering is now sorted.

Following a few threads on here, i did some testing and poking and eventually got the roof working partially. Eventually i replaced a split cog in the roof motor with a VW aftermarket version (£24) and the roof is now fully operational.

There are no leaks from the roof, the whole car is pretty solid, with a couple of rust spots here and there but i intend to get the bodywork fully re-painted at some point.

Alloys are enroute (Si Triangles) £140 for set of 4 with tyres and centrecaps intact

One question I have is about the variant. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to whether i have a Mk6 or Mk7 and also, the front and rear of the car are incorrect for the Calypso. She is fitted with the Ghia front and rear and she also has a strut brace under the bonnet. I was told this is something to do with the KARMANN badges in the rear quarter windows but I have been unable to get any decent info about what this means, if anything. If anyone on here is able to clear this up for me, I would be grateful for info.

I will post some pics up later today and I'll continue to update as and when things get done. This is a fairly slow pace project and I'll be asking for lots of advice from you lot

Cheers

Hi and welcome, am newish here myself & been doing largely the same thing, research research research! haha anyway I can answer one question at least. You have a Mk6, the confusion arises with the fact that non-ford types call the Mk5b the 6, so the Mk6 becomes the 7 in their world lol

Sounds like you got a decent motor & looking forward to seeing some pics of the progress. Oh, and I think (someone with more experience will correct me no doubt if i'm wrong) the strut brace is a standard fitment on the cabby. Well, our Mk5 has one anyway lol.
