Guest Delboybully
Hi, I have a j reg cabby, but its the last of the model before. It is my fun car and I love it. I do about 500 miles a year as it only comes out when it is sunny and dry on a weekend. It could do with a lot of work to get it looking great but it is in fair condition. I know I need a new roof but I would prefer not to do that just yet. There are a couple of tears by the rear windows but they dont leak. The problem I am having is recently the roof has started leaking on the passenger side front. I had a look tonight (in the rain) and it appears to becoming from where the roof connects to the windscreen frame. The roof on the passenger side sits up a bit above the seals but it doesnt look like any water is coming in from there. The lever to close the roof is quite hard to close on the dirvers side yet it is easy on the passenger side. I can see a wire that I am guessing is the tensioner, is there an adjustment for this and if so can anyone tell me where the adjustment end is? Its not garaged so its a right pain that it leaks!! I do have a Haines manual but its not much use as its for the 'proper' J reg escort not mine which is the previous model registered late. Ian71
Is it vinyl or mohair, vinly ones tend to shrink (had same problem on my mk5) i tryed everything to get mine to close, bought a complete second hand roof in the end.
Guest Delboybully
It is a vinyl roof. It feels like there isnt enough tension. Can this be adjusted?
Ian71
I took the roof off and tryed to get get adjustment on the hinges but my roof still came up 15mm short. Mk5 roofs are not the best,my mk4 has never been a problem in 13 years of ownership. Still not got my mk5 on the road.
Ian71
Could try a tip someone gave me, sit in the centre of the back seat. put your arms up the joint in the inner liner to feel the metal bars, then push the bars forward. I did not help mine as it was 15mm away but for small adjustment it may help. Also i assume its an electric roof, have you checked the fluid in the pump in the boot, if low wants to be topped up. Ford fluid expensive ,vw the same but cheaper (so most people say)
Guest Delboybully
I had another look yesterday and it seems to be leaking from the side bit also, there is a gap between the roof and the frame of the roof. The roof on the passenger side doesnt sit low enough. Its a manual roof and its a K reg not a J (it has a private plate on it which I put on as soon as I bought it thus my confusion) Given the 2 tears near the rear windows and this problem I am considering putting a new roof on if I cant get this leak sorted. I dont want to live with duct tape etc keeping it dry. Does anyone know where the best place to get a new roof is. Also how hard are they to change or how many hours should I expect a garage to charge for. I am capable of most regular mechanical work but generally pay a garage to fix my motors. Guest Delboybully
Thanks for the tip unfortunately it didnt work. I am going to just bite the bullet and get a new roof. The car also needs a respray and a couple of dents sorted. Just need to get some money sorted. I live in Hemel Hempstead so London isnt that far. I will have a look at the car hood warehouse
Guest Delboybully
Just had a look and the hoods are cheaper than I thought, £300 fitted for vinyl or £350 for a mohair. Is a mohair better and longer lasting or is it just cosmetic?
Ian71
Mohair is better but more expensive, not so many colours either. Car hood warehouse is in chessington round the m25 a couple of junctions after heathrow
