Hi my 1990 mk4 escort efi has started to idle at around 1500 rpm but whilst it does this is drives spot on.. until the engine gets warm and the rpm drop to around 800- 900 and then once i rev the car and then stop the engine will try n cut out and the revs will drop all the way down to 100 and sometimes even 0 and then cut out. any ideas? thanks

any help would be great, took it to 3 garages and not one of them have come up with a solution and all said its a different thing..

i have changed, the spark plugs, ht leads, air box, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, breather pipes. had the engine compression tested and its fine, had the coil pack tested and its fine.

if this is the idle speed control valve does anyone have a link to where i can buy one? or does anyone have one?

thank you

When the car is idling high at 1500rpm, if you disconnect the Idle Speed Control Valve (ISCV) wiring does the car cut out or idle normally? If it idles just under 750rpm then the ISCV just needs a clean

The ISCV is really easy to clean. Take it off the side of the inlet and you'll see two openings in it. Liberally clean it inside with brake cleaner. Also check the piping is clear of any debris and the holes in the inlet are clear.

Next thing to check is the breather pot and the vacuum pipe to it. If either of these are blocked it will cause poor idle.

thanks for the reply lee, if it disconnect the iscv the car just cuts out. it only idles at 1500 rpm when its cold, once its warm it ides between 700- 1100 rpm but then starts to cut out

the car drives fine going through the gears, its when you need to brake and/or change gear to a lower gear and the revs drop and then it cuts out

it doesnt sound like anything major, id try taking every sensor off one by one whilst trying to run the car theres not too many off them. and as someone said check for blockages/clean iscv or if that all fails try a diff ecu ive got two spare here but im in wrexham

There's your issue right there. The car should not cut out when you unplug the ISCV and 700rpm is low for a warm idle.

Have you changed the breather filter on the left side of the engine? These will cause the issues you describe as the engine draws in air to assist idle. Try taking the vacuum pipe off the breather filter with the engine running to see if it makes a difference. It may bring the revs up to nearer 900rpm which would suggest you just need a new filter, simple job and they're only £5.

think it may be sorted, i took the iscv off the car along with all the pipes and breathers around that area and gave them all a clean and soaked the lot in brake fluid.. been running fine all day and is not leaking oil (fingers crossed ) hopefully its sorted , i shall give it a good run tomorrow and let you guys know , Thanks for the help!

Glad to hear it's running better, hope it stays that way.

Yes the breather filter is the little black pot. If you've removed and soaked all those pipes and the iscv piping then you may well have dislodged a blockage that was causing your issues. Like I said, the 2 vacuum pipes to the breather from the inlet manifold are usually my first port of call and often overlooked. I spent countless hours trying to sort my poor idle and stalling issues after I removed that pot and blocked off those pipes... Turns out you need 'em!

so do i haha! n yeah cheers lee.

some people have said, i might be better getting rid of the breather filter and just putting a catch tank there instead, this true? or is it best to leave it standard

thanks

You can put a catch tank there, but you still need to connect those vacuum pipes to it. You could for example use a bailey or spec-r one, which have the correct connectors. If you go for a universal one then make sure you connect the vacuum lines to it some how and it's vented to atmosphere at some point.

I was going to fit a catch tank, but at £5 a go I decided to make the breather filter a regular service item along with an oil change. By the way, you can use the smaller breather as found on all other CVH's, I do on my EFi Turbo.
