Annoying & Confusing Brake Problem

Mk4 xr3i, been bleeding the brakes today and the offside front and near side rear won't bleed properly, no matter how much you do it air is still a problem, also, there is enough fluid to work the brakes but you can apply them and the two won't do anything, nothing at all.

now after a bit of google'n its aparent that its a diagonal system so there is a problem somewhere! I have had the two things off in the drivers side of the engine bay, think possibly there compensators, dunno if they have anything to do with it, im kinda stuck with it.

ANY help needed lol,

Cheers.

Hi Stu,

Are you using a pressure bleeding kit?

With the affected circuit, maybe try changing the bleed sequence. I.e. Do the nearside rear first then the offisde front. Then visa versa. This may help to flush out any air lock.

Hey mate, yeah used a bleed kit ran off a compressor, but that didn't seem to be very effective so went back to the old fashioned way and that was better. I'm going to have a proper look next time, just strange how the brakes won't work at all either.

Do you know what the two cylinder things in the engine Bay are called/for?

Just a thought, is your car one of the rare ones with Abs fitted? If so then they can be an arse to bleed as there is a complex procedure for doing it and also the rear suspension needs to be under load when doing it because of the load apportioning valves.

All the best

Still no joy, I've changed both pressure regulators and the master cylinder, front kind of stopped, possible ok after a bleed, as for the rear, not a thing! Got a new cylinder to put on the rear tomoz in the hope the old one is siezed. Can't be arsed in general with it at the mo, runs sweet bit few annoying things to sort
