Guest Rustler
Hi ..... I'm just doing a general "Front" brake o'haul on my '92 MK5 130bhp 42k mile cabby, fitted as OM with front vented 260mm Dia x 24mm discs and (I Think)"TREVES" calipers....I'm about to fit new "Green Stuff" pads and Groved discs. I've also got the piston repair kit ..New Dust Covers, Piston Seals, and appropriate grease....but ... have been advised not to tackle the "Seal O'Haul" job as its too complicated and difficult to complete without damage to either the "BORE" or the new rubbers. Apparently you need some special "Dental" tools in order to do the job without damage to the components !!!...........Has anyone done this job ? or perhaps able to give some advice on how to tackle it? or maybe confirm my initial advice of ...LEAVE IT ALONE M8.. Any road ..thanks to all you cabbiers for your time in reading this ....just hope someone out there can shine some light on .."ME PROBLEM" PS ALSO FITTING NEW "HEL" S/Steel Hoses allround.. Guest tony.rose
Keep looking at this myself as mine need doing. Decided now to replace the calipers as this is the easiest and safe option!!!
iansoutham
Piece of piss to do. I have done loads of brake caliper overhauls (I don't touch rear calipers with the external handbrake (big spring on the outside) as they tend to rust and you do more harm than good if not careful). You need to take your time and they go together with no real provlems. Use some "rubber grease" and they will go. The hardest thing is getting the dust seal into place as the slot it goes into in the caliper and the piston are almost in identical places and it can be fiddly. Ideally, get yourself a spare pair of calipers, "pop" the piston out and then you can derust or repaint them accordingly. That way you do not have to rush to redo yours, and if they go wrong, you still have a pair of calipers to use to keep the car on the road. Guest Rustler
Thanks Ian & Tony for your comments and helpfull info. Initially after dismantling the first caliper, I thought I'd have a go at overhauling them myself,....but .. could'nt see how to get the dust cover back on,so like TONY,decided to go for "Remanufactured" units as the safe bet. Then found, the cost of exchange units were well above my budget, ie. between £70. & £80 each, PLUS POSTEGE to & from France..So now going down the road on Ian's advice and have another go at refurbing myself... Will post up the results some time later this month. Thanks Again M8's..........
Guest Rustler
Hi Again... "AN UP DATE ON DIY REFURB CALLIPERS" Calipers now all back together, and on the cabby, I found that with the correct grease, the new seals and dust covers went in a treat Dave Swift from "Brakes International" produced a tutorial video , in order to show exactly how to go about the job... a really excellent and clear guide..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZA38U-bPfA One mistake that I made........as I could'nt obtain proper "2 part caliper paint + cleaner" here in France ,I used a HIGH TEMP brush on paint instead, with disasterious results....my advice ...get hold of the correct paint kit, at all costs.... QUESTION... which grease ,if any, do you suggest is used on the rear of the pads(METAL BACKS) and on the PAD locating tabs (Top & Bottom) where they contact and slide on the caliper and anchor bracket ??..................any ideas would help Rustler
