  1. Have had a fault for a while with no Temperature gauge, didn't bother me much, tried changing gauge thinking it was faulty still nothing, bit later changed sender then worked for about 20 mins before alternator light illuminated, unplugged sender light goes out. Thought stuff it I'll leave it, never had a escort overheat it will be fine (famous last words) a few weeks back engine overheated (fan switch) failure Ford's charged me £56 for a new one, which lasted 3 weeks, bought another one from motor factors (a lot cheaper) plugged that in then turned attention back getting the sender problem fixed. Started engine, plugged in sender, and noticed engine dips, so turned it off, and did a continuity test between the two wires that connect to the sender, and there is continuity between the both wires, so traced them, and the blue, and black wire connects straight to battery Negative, while the Red, and White wire enters the fuse box on one plug, and leaves via another to the temperature gauge. So after unplugging all connectors along the loom, and in the fuse box I am still getting continuity along the Red, and White, and the Blue, and Black. I then realise that theres a Blue, and Black also connected to the D+ connection of the alternator, I disconnect this, and the fault is gone. So I think right connect everything back together, and stick my alternator tester on battery to see if its faulty 'Hey Presto' faulty alternator, so get it fixed (£40) put it on, tester says alternator charging OK, happy days NOT ! Connect sender engine dips as before, gauge hits the top as before, but theres a difference, now it burns out the sender, smoke and everything ! Gone through two in a fortnight. Within seconds of connecting it, it gets hot, starts to smell, and produces smoke ! Any advice would be much appreciated.
  2. Update : been kicking myself a bit, turns out it was the inlet manifold gasket WARNING : when fitting new inlet manifold DO NOT ! Throw away the original green rubber inlet port seals, as the manifold gasket doesn't make up for the gaps that are filled with the seals ( nobody told me this) massive airloss hence the backfire, and rough idle problems. So for anyone else which has experienced the same problems, after taking of the manifold gasket check the green rubbers seals are there. (Now to solve the case of the burning temperature sender). Thanks to all who have helped me, and hope this of use to anyone experiencing similar problems.
  3. Yes I checked leads, and gasket. Will just have perciver, if I find it I will post for everyone else to know for reference :-) thanks for your help, and wishing me luck. ;-)
  4. Yes Ian71 it was running fine, never had a fault with it running, just this now, and I've put everything back as it was. It's a bit of a tricky one, and worst thing is my OBD II reader won't link to the car :‘-(
  5. Hi I've just replaced the head gasket on my Mk6 1.6 zetec Cabriolet, put it all back together, and it won't idle, just revs up on initial start up, and stalls. Throttle response is terrible, but if you floor it you can get it to catch up, and then you have to play it like a Wah pedal to keeping it going. Also when you manage to keep it running it backfires on Cylinder 4. I changed crank sensor as had similar problem on my Land Rover Freelander, and this cured the problem, but doesn't seem be the case this time, only thing left to do is to take the Cambelt back off, and turn crank 180, or 360 degrees to see if my valve timing is out ( another Freelander trick lol) any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  6. Everyone needs some time out, enjoy
  7. on my mk6 there is a 20 amp (yellow) fuse in the boot, in space between the outer wing, and the side of the boot space on the left of the boot in the same area as the Electric Aerial (same side as roof pump)
  8. Hi would anyone know of a motor factors who may be able to supply me with a nearside rear brake plate for a Mk 6 Escort Cabriolet ? I got the new Offside from Fords who have just informed me they no longer Manufacture the Nearside, I need a new one as I am fully restoring the Vehicle, and wish to use as many new parts as is possible, as it makes it easier for me to change bits straight over instead of taking the old parts off, and cleaning them up, and removing rust and such as I am doing the work on a drive, and have no Garage in which to do any repair work. the Ford Part No is 1005987. The only ones I can find on Ebay are 203mm, mine is a 181mm, and as I already have the offside would now need to match up with another 181mm instead of the extra cost of finding the two 203mm, as I have already bought new drums, and shoes. any help, or leads/links would be much appreciated Thanks Calypso Cab
  9. Hi does anyone know of any aftermarket firms that do the Weather strip that goes from the Passenger mirror area up along the Windscreen Frame, and down to the Drivers mirror ? I have priced with Local Ford Dealer, and they cost £309. Too much for me :-( Thanks in advance.
  10. I haven't changed the MAF sensor, nor do I have black smoke, that's why I was hoping my reader would tell me as I have suspect MAF sensor, and reader is 'supposed' to be compatible with vehicles 1996 - 2001, but evidently not. Thanks both much appreciated, I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet, and book it into Ford's sadly.
  11. Hi don't know if anyone else has experienced the same problem, but I have a 1997 MK6 Escort Calypso 1.6 16v Zetec, and it needs a lot of work. I'm noticing that it seems to be holding back on power, checked the Oxygen Sensor fuse, and replaced it as it was blown, but no real change to performance, then decided to put my fault code reader on to see if I could find the problem (cheap eBay one, which has worked on my 2001 Peugeot 406), but keeps displaying 'Linking Error' on checking the obd socket I found pin 5 was corroded, so I got another obd socket from a scrappy, and pinched the pin from that one, and soldered wire onto it, but still getting 'Linking Error' message. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :-)
  12. I just solved this problem on my MK6 cab by using a measuring cup I pinched from my Mrs Breadmaker, and a jubilee clip. Works a treat so far ;-)
