Speedo/mile Counter Not Working

Hi All

I have 1994 Escort Cabriolet. The Speedo/Rev Counter/Engine Temp and Mile Counter are not working. The Fuel gage does work.

This hasn't been working since I got the car in December.

Previous owner swapped original steering wheel for aftermarket. Unsure if this model should have an air bag but don't think this is the reason for the instrument panel to stop working.

Daft question but is it all run off a fuse that may have blown ?

Any other advice would be very helpful :-)

Think it should have an air bag. Perhaps they removed the instruments to take the warning light bulb out and haven't reconected the plug properly? (The light would stay on if the air bag isn't fitted).

The Speedo is driven by a cable which can be fiddly to get in. Remove the cluster and have a look.

Cheers

I'd agree it does sound like the instruments could have been fitted back without connecting some of the plugs or speedo cable...

As suggested, I would pull the instruments out and have a look what's going on behind there first off. I don't *think* there's a common fuse that would affect the gauges although I am only looking in my 1990/1 handbook for the info lol...

Just a thought, do the instrument lights work? only reference I could find in that book is to fuse 9 (10A or 30A) "instrument lighting, heavy duty cooling fan/normal cooling fan"...

Thank you to you both - I have acquired an original (non air bag version) steering wheel so while taking off the aftermarket one I'll have a look at the instrument panel.

I'm hoping you are right and that its just the cables that have been left unconnected.

The lights on the dashboard/instrument panel work fine; warning lights, indicators, battery, ignition etc etc all come on its just the dials themselves that are static.

Another question I have, seens as 'username' appears to have the same MK as myself - in the boot there is a pull leaver on the right hand side towards the lid. It looks like an old 'choke' but obviously isn't. It appears to be attached to some sort of cable system but I have absolutely no idea what it does. Do you??

I think it releases the back seats ,so they push down towards the front seats.

It does pull the knob and the lock on the back of the bottom half of the rear seat should disengage ( you should be able to see it move ) allowing you to push the bottom half of the rear seat down from the boot ( towards the drivers seat as stated )

Pull it and find out...... Go on....... You know you what to!!!!

Haha I saw that knob on mine, when I first got it and thought it was a release switch for the roof when you have to manually put it down if the electrics fail ? ( mines got the electric hood )

I PULLED IT !!! SEVERAL TIMES , couldn't see what it did, then read the owners manual and found out what it really was for :banana_dance:

Haha yeh, that knob reminded me of old Chokes (and even older Diesel "pull to stop"s)!!!

As said, it operates the folding seat catch although I'm not sure just how useful this feature is on the cabby being as only the bottom half of the backrest folds. Some people I believe have used it as an emergency access between boot & passenger area but I can imagine that'd be a squeeze (and of limited use if you locked the keys in the boot, how would you pull the lever with the boot shut??? ALWAYS keep tabs on your keys before you shut the bootlid!!! Glad we have spares is all I can say *blush*)

If you do fold the seat down, when you put it back make sure the catch has engaged properly as the cable & lock mechanism get stiff through lack of use and damp in the boot, holding the catch in the unlocked position.

Oh by the way Nick. The roof release, if you haven't found it yet, is located on the pump body. Bottom left side of the boot behind a flap in the carpet, it's a little T shaped knob (similar to a domestic radiator bleed key) that you unwind all the way anticlockwise to release the hydraulics and allow manual roof operation...

YEP thanks for the info but I'd found that also, but my roof works fine so haven't tried it yet
