Hi Can any one help with a dripping banjo on my fuel pump on my mk4 escort xr3i . I have used new copper washers but it just keeps leaking however hard i try . should it be as tight as possible or just hand tight ? also is it okay to use threadlock on this . Any thoughts appreciated as i am getting fed up with this now

If in doubt, heat the washers up and then refit. You are basically reannealing them.

Annealing is a heat process whereby a metal is heated to a specific temperature /colour and then allowed to cool slowly. This softens the metal which means it can be cut and shaped more easily.

If there is a slight imperfection, this can help overcome it

I have done this job, and found that aluminium washers which the BMW used, to be better. make sure all faces are clean, do not let dirt or grit get on any surface, tighten by hand then nip it up about if you over tighten the damn things will leak. The copper washers I was forever getting leaks or a fuel smell.

Evening all thanks for all the advice .Popped out tonight with one of the wife,s nail files cleaned both sides with new washers and at last its as dry as a bone . I think my tank has loads of crap in it as when i removed the previous pump their seemed to be lots of bits in it and i think this is why the pump sometimes makes noise like it struggling to get fuel . I dont want to have to keep replacing pumps so is their anywhere people would recommend for a new replacement .

thanks again

I contacted Eurocar parts, late in 2012 and the fuel tank is not available and nearly all parts, bar, the regular service items are not available a MK3 escort, or injection. I have just asked again and they still did not carry the item or could not source it. I bought one from eBay for £120.
