Guest damsie4
Hi I have recently become the proud owner of a 1996 1.8 Ghia Cabriolet. The electric roof doesn't appear to work! I've used an electric multimeter and this seems to confirm that there is no live power coming into the motor. I've looked at the wiring in the drivers side boot space and on the face of it all appears correct and undamaged. There are 2x green relays which were tucked behind the trim, and another single green relay on its own with a separate 15amp fuse next to it. The previous owner told me that the roof stopped working when his wife left the roof down with a heavy bag on it, then when she continously tried to close it the roof stopped working and they assumed the motor had burn out! Please can anyone help with any advice whatsoever as to where I should start to try and rectify this. Is the red live wire connected somewhere to a fuseway in the fusebox in the drivers side front footwell?.....or somwhere else, as I was hoping it may be just as simple as a fuse having blown!? Incidentally I've notice that there's a stray red (live?) wire that's been disconnected near the live terminal of the battery under the bonnet. This is taped together with black insulating tape with a blue wire (appears original factory fit) and disappears towards the drivers side of the engine bay and into the front drivers footwell area. But am unsure if this is for something else or just a red herring! Any advice very glady appreciated. Thanks
Vincygav
You may also find that to find the fault the power to the roof only operates with the key in position 1. Once ignition is in position 2 run, it would not work, unless you remove the yellow relay so it can run with the engine on. Ford had did this putting an additional relay to stop people using it whilst driving the car.
Guest damsie4
Thanks to Escort Si-130 for his prompt reply! Tried just turning the key to position 1 but it still doesn't work. Pulled the switch in the centre console out and put the multimeter on it but no power going into it. Went into the boot, disconnected the muti plug where the red and black wire go into the motor and popped a portable 12v power source to it, and hey presto the motor works! Obviously it seems the problem lies with no power coming into the switch onwards so I need to trace the power source back further, but hopefully I'm getting a little closer. My next main question is, I am aware of the 15a fuse and relays in the boot, but the problem seems to lie before then. Is there another fuse in the fusebox or somewhere else towards the front of the car which controls the power going into the roof switch? I mentioned in my previous post that there seems to be a thin live (red) wire twinned with a blue wire in the engne bay; it looks like the red wire has been deliberately disconnected from the battery!? Is this how they would have powered the electric hood, or is the wiring more discreet? Thanks again
