StuDaBear
Well I'm new on here guys, thought I would give you a quick run down on my project upto date. I purchased the car when it was running cvh turbo, mfi set up I then got talking to jano oddkidd at fordfair who convinced me to convert it to efi using cosworth engine mangement set up, to cut a very long winded story short I eventually got so sick of the problems the car gained running this system, I ripped it all out and me and my mate bob converted it to run on megasquirt This was when we got it running on the cossie set up, (when it would run) So when I say I ripped it all out we went to this. Got rid of the abs, had the gearbox rebuilt with a lsd added
StuDaBear
so with loads more money spent we started the rebuild 630cc injectors for lots of boost transit connect starter motor and wideband lambda set up with the engine now back in, 1 of 3 cvh engines it had in the bay last year. Mid way through wiring in the new engine management system
Admin Ollie Posted June 23, 2013 Admin Share Posted June 23, 2013 like it keep the pics coming someone asked the other day about a connect starter motor so no probs fitting on a cvh then ?
StuDaBear
the cvh I fitted at the time of the megasquirt conversion turned out to have a cracked block so after driving it only 3 times I spat my dummy out good and proper, cashed the tax back in and sulked for a while whilst wondering what to do next. Over the next few weeks I started removing the engine once again, once it was out I decided to fit another cvh bottom end I had sat in the garage, as it was only gonna cost me about £50 in parts and my own time, so once this was fitted I used it for the summer or what was left of the summer, the engine was a bag of cack too, oil light would flicker when properly hot at idle, etc etc, it made alright performance also had good economy, I put this down to the mapping skills of rick@unicornmotordevelopments. But I still wasn't happy regarding this engine so a plan was required.
StuDaBear
like it keep the pics coming someone asked the other day about a connect starter motor so no probs fitting on a cvh then ? Hi ollie, transit connect starter bolts straight on, just needs the trigger wire connector changing. You need a diesel starter though, about £70 new on ebay, I can get the link if it helps people. StuDaBear
A plan was formulated with the help of karlos G's guide on passionford. With its last or 1 of its last trips out to a local classic car show A shopping list was compiled and my pockets started to cry. 1st on the list was Got it home and onto the engine stand, focus estate is great for shifting engines about. StuDaBear
Cylinder head removed and sold as I won't be using the v v t ftom the st170 engine. A brand new cylinder head was purchased, the valve springs from the st head were fitted into the new head, that was a boring fiddly job. The st spring is the one on the right, these are much better for turbocharged engines. The new head Modding it for the cvh thermostat housing and the coolant temp sensor for the engine management. StuDaBear
It was then time to take care of the bottom end of the engine with some ARP conrod bolts The sump needed modding, to clear the starter motor and offside driveshaft, plus add oil return for the turbo and breather return. Then I built it all up,
StuDaBear
So with the help from my mate big strong ben we fitted the engine and gearbox, in a single car garage and no engine crane, after which we thought we deserved to go to the pub. the clearance between the timing belt tensioner was very close, I wasn't happy with this and it got even closer when I fitted vibratechnics gearbox mounts. I fitted a silvertop zetec metal cam cover which I added a breather to. I've increased the clearance between the engine mounting ledge and the timing belt tensioner using a dremel type tool, I've fitted a focus rs mk1 inlet manifold, really need to organise uploading some more pictures when I get a minute. This is about where I'm at upto now, the turbo should be back with me any day now as I've had a bigger exhaust housing added for the 2ltr, I'm struggling a bit to get the bottom rad hose setup sorted out to run nice and smooth, with no fouling or kinking so if anybody can offer any advise on this if they have done a similar conversion? I'm hoping to get the car to fordfair but if it isn't fully finished and mapped I will have to take the wifes focus st. Thanks for looking people. StuDaBear
Thanks for the kind words, upto now for fordfair I'm gonna book with passionford as it keeps it open for me incase the cabriolet isn't ready, a bright orange 5 door st would look a bit out of place on the escort cabriolet club stand. I would defo be up for doing some other shows with you guys tho! I'm just awaiting on some more parts to get the bottom hose hopefully storted then I can crack on with getting it running. Hopefully gonna get the fuel lines connected up tomorrow, with my mate bob coming to make the few wiring changes for the focus rs inlet. StuDaBear
Just had it fired up for a couple of seconds, got no cooling system or exhaust but it started up, so a massive push is in order for the next week or so.
StuDaBear
Well guys I've put some serious hours in on the motor and its now alive, needs a couple of bits tidying, then a fuel pressure check as its a bit lean, then the mapping can be looked at followed by suspension reassemble. StuDaBear
Covered around 30 miles now on the base map, 22 of which was tonight, had a bit of clutch slip when coming on boost a couple of times, I'm hoping that the clutch needs to bed in otherwise its gonna be gearbox out again and a stronger clutch set up. Noticed a bit of rumbling from the rear so need to check the wheel bearings, although I have a feeling it is down to the rear tyres, I think I need to look at changing the suspension set up as its just too bangy and crashy, On a plus point it pulls like a blooming train

StuDaBear
Cheers bud. Its booked in for mapping on thursday.
StuDaBear
Its mapped now, results are superb, it goes like a rocket, estimated 250-260bhp, rolling rd to confirm. Running just over a bar of boost, its awesome, plant it in 5th at 70mph and it still pulls you back in your seat, on a private rd of course. We tried 18psi of boost but the clutch was reluctant to hold, so I backed it off, more power would need a clutch that costs near £400, it would be heavy too, so it will have to do as is.Bad point of the day is it feels like the offside outer cv joint is seizing/dying, stiff to turn to the right and knock/clunk when taking up drive. So I've ordered a couple of replacements, might as well change the pair.
