How To Unclip/lift Rear Of Hood

Hi I joined today and am looking forward to posting some pics of my 1997 Escort Ghia Cabriolet. I purchased this from ebay 5 years ago with a mileage of 24,000! It needed to have been a good buy because it was to replace my 1989 XR3i Cabriolet which I owned for 17 years and I still have some pics as I was sad to see it go. It just became too small for my growing children.

My question is; at the bottom of the rear of the hood there is a seal under which I have found 3 rust spots. I have spoken to my garage and they will do this for me so long as the roof can be "lifted" - they didn't seem to see this as a probem. However, I would like to know how this can be done, is it something to do with the tonneau cover fixings?

Hi Sharon that is a very common place for them to rust I have had three all have had little rust spots there. Personally I would leave them for long as possible maybe treat them? I am no mechanic but if a garage took the seal off and repaired the rust there is a chance the seal may not go back properly and leave a gap for water, but that's only a guess obviously they will know more than me lol and for getting to it I would say put the roof down and mask off the roof and this will leave the seal not connected to the roof so could be prised away.

I may be wrong though so don't take it as gospel,

Thanks

Kev

Hi Kev - thanks for your post. I had noticed that the seal was raised which made me take a closer look. The garage that I'm going to are well known for their body work so I am trusting them. The hood definately needs to come up so that they can get to that area but you have raised a very valid point. Catch 22 - I don't want to let the rust get any worse but I can see that the seal could then become an issue itself. I may have to contact a hood company to see if they would give me a bit of free advice.

Yeah speak to a hood company as I'm sure they would have come across it before. Sounds like you got a good car though with only 24,000 on the clock! I can see why you want it done. Also thinking about it if the seal was letting water in after repairing it should drain away from the roof well but again I couldn't garuntee lol

Hi Kev, thanks. I was very lucky. I had seen it on EBay but kept dismissing it because the description me think the owner would want a lot for it. Near the end of the auction (no one had bid) I decided to have a look and loved it. Unfortunatey I was outbid but the new owner contacted me a month later and said it wasn't suitable for him and did I still want to buy it -at the same price is sold for! I of course, snapped up the offer. The car has still only done 42,000 miles and that is because I don't do many miles but I don't pamper it. I'm gonna call a hood company today -I'll let you know the outcome. thanks again

Hi Each

Was there an outcome to this problem please?

Do the studs that fix the tonneau also hold the back of the hood down and if so how are they fixed into the body work?

I had a cheapy re-spray a few years back (now regretted of course!) and a couple of these studs are not fully in. I'm arranging for a proper re-spray now but I'm concerned about these being removed again. I'd like to be 'gened' up before I discuss with the garage.

Thanks

Rodders
