Mk5 (1994 Cabriolet Mistral) Roof Not Responding

HI,

I am new to the forum and hoping someone can help. I bought, only a week ago a 1994 (L) Cabriolet Mistral. It's in decent condition for its age although it needs a re-spray and some TLC.

Having never owned one of these originally I am unsure of A) the correct process for lowering your roof and  the correct process of elimination in regards to fixing it as it appears it does not, currently, work.

I believe (based on internet searches) the ignition needs to be in the second 'click' before unhooking the manual locks and clicking the button....

- My friend's BMW needs the windows down first as well but I've not read this anywhere for the Escort ?

If the above process is correct then it appears I have a fault.

Does anyone have a list of checks I can perform to identify where the fault lies?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome. Turn key to position one (not ignition on) no need to touch windows. It wont work any other way. If it still not working listen to here if it is humming, the pump is in the boot. If no noise it could be a fuse, again in the boot normally. There is a level indicator on the pump for fluid if low it will need topping up. If all else fails you can open maualally by winding the brass key attached to the pump in the boot anti-clockwise i think from memory then you can open the roof by hand. Dont forget to unlatch the handles in both cases.

Hi

Thank you for your advice. I'll try all your suggestions and see what happens. Fingers crossed its just the fuse or pump fluid.

Its 20+ years old so I don't really mind if it doesn't open electrically but it would be nice to get it working if I can.

Can I also ask; the car currently has a awful after market steering wheel. I don't have an issue with aftermarket but the previous owner just hasn't chosen a nice one at all. Anyway, I want to restore it to original. In the car, along with all sorts of rubbish, was an air bag which suggests the steering wheel had an air bag - however everything I've seen for the 1994 Cabriolet suggest they did not have a steering wheel airbag and simply had a horn in the centre circle. Do you or anyone else know IF the 1994 (L reg) Cabriolet had an airbag steering wheel?

Thanks :-)

Sorry, struggling to work out how you post a picture on here.

It was registered in May 1994 which leads me to believe, as its an early in the year model, that Ian is correct.

Is there anything specific within the vehicle that would suggest wether or not it had an airbag steering wheel? All signs point to the fact that it had a standard steering wheel.

Yes some of the mk5b's had airbags. The ones that had airbags had different front seat mounts that are like the mk6. The dashboard clock was also different and had a part in it for the airbag light.

Thank you for your comments.

The dashboard clock has an indicator light above the 'H' hour button. Am I right in thinking this is the air bag indicator light? It stays illuminated and solid red.....

I have the same side skirts as the RS2000 picture you have posted but the rest of the body shape (including the front bumper without fog/indicators) as the GHIA RS picture. I would presume one of the previous owners had the skirts fitted aftermarket as you can see some paint discolouration at the joint with the door sills.

The vehicle was registered in the May of 1994 which leads me to believe its not a MK5b but what are your thoughts on the dash clock light?
