Guest no1birdman
Not had car running for a few years now due to not been able to find a 16oo diesel engine, Ive just resprayed it though so was thinking its time to lift engine out and spray repair inside engine compartment, now when i did conversion 20 years ago i dropped old engine underneath and put diesel in from underneath,Now im 20 years older that was hard work then so wondering if i can lift diesel out from top and leave gearbox in saves messing with drive shafts etc.m now 68 so thinking of putting in a small petrol engine if anyone got one complete, 1300,1400 etc, there were plenty of engines about 20 years ago but i just want now a easy conversion, no ecu etc i can wire it back up easy to petrol ,All help and advice apreciated. thank you
Ian71
If its a mk4 i would not bother with 1.3 or 1.4 1.6 would be more economical ,easier to locate one to.
Guest no1birdman
but a 1600 comes with fuel injection etc and i took all that out with the wireing when i put the diesel in,so early 1.3 or 1.4 i can wire up easy.do they lift out of the top,

Guest no1birdman
saves a bit of work, id leave gearbox in ,it looks a bit tight, the 1600 engines no fancy ecu is there just want a easy swap,my fuel tank is in the boot when i was on diesel lol
Guest no1birdman
got a engine running on garage floor now, stripped old diesel down just left with block to pull out upwards while leaving gearbox in place, it looks a tight fit. thinking of cutting inner wing a bit to allow engine to move a bit more foreward then reweld inner wing, also thought of taking crankshaft pulley off but its to dfficult to get at even with head off unless again i cut inner wing, id rather cut and weld than drop engine and box and all that work, new 1.3 ohv engine ive stripped down and rebuilt and thats a inch or 2 shorter so should go in easy.also wundered about jacking gearbox up so engine gows in or out at a angle.Im not doing bad at 68 still playing with cars, you are young twice lol

RScab
TBH I wouldn't cut away at the inner wing I'd drop the Passenger strut Pop out the drive shafts from he box drop the gearbox mounts with the box on a trolley jack & move the box bac a few inch's
Guest no1birdman
ive cut it now, tried to get crankshaft nut off would not budge, so cut inner wing so having a go at removing pully to give me more room, ill cut crank bolt off to free pulley if impact gun wont budge it, The inner wing is threble skinned but easy to weld back up, with it been a diesel i put in its a bit longer so not much room, once i can pull it foreward i can lift the block out as took head off and manifolds etc or drop it,
Guest no1birdman
crank nut undone, pulley off. pulling it out in morning up bank i hope, but has head manifolds off etc i might see if its easier to pull off gearbox spline and drop on floor, then its welding, spraying, tidying up bits etc and repars to rack and driveshafts cv joint rubbers etc.
